Actually, I get really irritated by that Anniversary booklet. It completely leaves out the rest of the Army that suffered and some died at Cassino - Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery, Royal Signals, Pioneer Corps, Army Catering Corps, Military Police, Cyprus Regiment, Army Service Corps, Ordnance Corps, Intelligence Corps, Chaplains' Department, Recce Corps and others.

    Regards

    Frank

    A nice surprise today,
Received the the War Diary in C-D format from Drew of the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers Jan 1944-Aug 1944.
Had a quick look theres over 700 pages of maps, sketches, notes, and a few photos also. (can't wait to start reading it over the coming weeks.)

Many thanks Andy, a brilliant service as usual.

    That booklet is crap.

They could have put out something brilliant given time and their access to resources, but it's pretty flimsy and even the areas it does cover are covered in a precursory and slipshod manner with little depth or analysis.

If they had wanted to make it more commemorative and less descriptive, they should have compiled an exhaustive list of units at Cassino as well as a roll of honour--and then damn well checked them.

Many thanks to Frank (minden1759) for getting this headstone photo of Jim Layton on a recent trip to Monte Cassino.
My mother would of been over the moon if she could of seen this picture.(her brother's headstone) always wanted to go and visit his grave, sadly it never happened.

It's good to read your acknowledgement that the original list was woefully incomplete.

My main concern is that in the fullness of time, I and other like minded souls , will no longer be around to point out such omissions !
I am pleased to report that this forum is full of threads relating to Monte Cassino, including this one: Final thoughts on Monte Cassino

    Hi Ron,
    Fantastic photo mate.
I don't know how many times I've read books giving different accounts on events/dates/times, etc leaving one baffled as to who's telling the true account.(the joy of research we've all been there) always happy to be corrected to get to the truth.I find This forum and it's very knowledgeable member's the best place to get the correct information needed.(although they can be wrong sometimes)

    Cassino,
I am currently working with Frank,(minden 1759) with a view to going on one of his tour's.

    best wishes and good health,............Graham.
