Sidearms. Who had the better weapons?

Having fired a Colt .45 auto, I can vouch that they had the kick of a mule and every
times I fired the b thing was pointing to the sky after firing. Would prefer a smaller
9 mm, say Luger or something like that.

    "I gots to know"

I'd vote for the Colt 1911 too, mainly because I carried it as a side arm when I was an M-60 gunner in the army. Yes it was heavy, and all that ammo was heavy, but so was everything else I had to carry. And besides, my dad give me one with my name, rank and serial number engraved on the barrel for my first Christmas in the army!

I still carry a .45 as a side arm now (in a shoulder holster), but it is of the Sig Sauer variety.

    You stole my thunder.

I was going to comment that it was the Colt 1911, because after you missed all your targets, you could throw the thing. With it's large size and weight, if you hit someone, you'd do a lot more damage than with those other puny pistols. Plus, there was the added bonus of when you lost all that weight hanging on your hip, you can run faster.B)

In all honesty, I did not find the Colt 1911 a poor weapon to shoot. It is heavy, but the kick wasn't nearly what I expected and it was not hard to put on target.

I carry a sorta scaled down version of one now, a Taurus Millennium. It fires the same cartridge as the M1911, but carries one less in the magazine. My 12 yo daughter has fired it and says the kick was not as bad as my .38 Special revolver.

I love 1911s, i find them easy enough to keep on target and manage recoil. i really want to try out a TT-33, i have never even seen one in person, i hear they have excellent ballistics.

Only if they are new. The dad of one of my mates once told me that when he was in the army, he had a TT as a sidearm (in the '80s, not the '50s or '60s!), and he said that his weapon was so abused, that it couldn't get the rounds out straight at 7(!!) meters. The bullets were also spinning in a very strange way: they were looping and if they'd hit the target they often arrived with their bottom ahead... But it was a really abused piece I guess.
I think a TT (7.62x25mm) would really be "powerless" for you after a .45 Colt:p:p:D

Most vets i have spoken to, liked the Luger, coz they could sell all they could carry to the Yanks.!!!!!

The Luger looks pretty cool as well. :) I know that that's not something to rate a weapon by, but I think it looks pretty funky :)

My dad said a story on the Luger!:p (you should be pretty bored with all my "some told me sth about sth" stories:p)
He said it is "the" close-combat auto pistol. He had a grip on it when he was in France at the Police's Officer school, and he said at close range (10ms) it was just brutal. "I could feel it's firepower in my hands" he said.

My wife does, too. I'm in the market for a .32 Beretta Tomcat for her. It is small enough to fit in my front pocket.

For sheer Style, I'm having a broomhandle Mauser C96, or a Webley with a bayonet (to increase lethality when you throw it at someone).

Though obviously for club nights, a gentleman will only be seen out with a highly polished Lanchester.

And before you start laughing this one sold for $3,900 :)

And Clive, I'm challenging your bid for the largest pistol title, folding bayonet and all!

I haven't fired anything other than the then, standard Smith and Wesson Police Pistols, both standard and short barrelled.

However, I once had to requalify at Altcar Army range in merseyside as we had to use their gas Building for CS training, afterwards being handed a Browning Pistol with a full magazine to play with.

It was like firing a cannon in comparison.
I left the range with a smile:).
