Was in a Maritime Museum in Greencastle Co. donegal last July and took some photos of things they found in Lough Foyle. First up are some photos of items relating to a B-17 that crashed in the Lough Foyle area and also an altimeter relating to a Liberator that crashed in the area also.
Next up, my 2 eldest chaps and me outside Fort Drumree , one of the treaty forts ceded by the British to Ireland in 1938
Walking along some of the Fortifications. They are quite extensive and well sited at the entrance to the Lough
Yeah it was a good day all round. That forts look out on the wartime mooring for the British High Seas Fleet during WW1. Admiral Jellicoe realised that Scapa Flow was open to U-Boat attack and so Lough Swilly was quickly identified as a better port because it was shallower. So the British High Sea Fleet moved to Lough Swilly where these forts helped proved security for the fleet.
Gotthard, Great photographs. The shot of your children by the cannon is great. Did they ask to take it home to play with? Thanks for sharing. Regards Tom
