Didn't watch it, nor ever read the book. Am I missing out on a treat or is it aload of guff ? SS-GB - BBC One
Its OK - needs to really get started though, having said that often the first episodes are just setting the scene. I remember a long time back watching a film (yes in black & white) that was about what would have happened had Germany made and won its invasion of GB - not sure if SS-GB is a TV remake of that for todays market TD edited to add: Think its this one - It Happened Here - Wikipedia
I think I must be a bit of a misery guts, but I don't generally like these what if types of programs.
Same here really, but I do remember that film even today, and it would have been in the 1970's I watched it, and it gave me another viewpoint. I am guessing, but like all countries that have been invaded somewhere, somehow the occupying force are always on the back foot, and eventually have to 'deoccupy' ? It also made me think about how the secret army would have performed. Who knows it may yet come to pass TD
Morning, Thats an hour I will never get back. Dull, dull dull and thats when I could hear what was being said. Getting a right slating on Twitter etc. Regards, Graeme
I watched the first episode but don't think I will be watching any more. I couldn't make any sense of it all all and it wasn't even entertaining. They should keep the 'alternative history' stories to science fiction set way into the future. Basically anything can be made up for an 'alternative history, what if' story. So this gives the green light to show anything and just say it is fiction. If it was a fictional story about the German occupation of the Channel Islands or a village in one of the occupied countries of Western Europe there might at least have been some semblance of reality to it. But, somebody might have had to do some proper research to try and get some things right!
For 1940 I believe it was the wrong mark of Spitfire shown in the opening scenes, also the dialog was too muffled for me. Not sure if I'll stick with it
BBC to look into the mumbling: SS-GB: BBC to 'look at' sound levels after mumbling complaints - BBC News
i dunno, taped then watched it. could be interesting as long as it doesnt feature too much of his rumping activities. stick to the war drama! one thing that did get on my tits though was the male leads voice. whats with these latest dramas where the male leads voice is that 'tough guy whisper' .....its so fake!!
I think the film TD may have seen was It Happened Here, made in 1964 ... It Happened Here - Wikipedia ... SS-GB isn't a remake of this, although the theme is obviously similar. I thought the BBC's SS-GB wasn't too bad. I remember reading the book ages ago and enjoying it. On the telly, the first episode was a bit of a slog, but I suppose they had to shoehorn in a lot of scene setting and characterisation before they could get to the action. Hopefully it will improve.
* I don't watch much on TV these days, as I find it predominantly boring. The comedians are not funny, the tellers of fact are usually telling lies, the news is sensational but usually without any foundation - fake news President Trump. I am expected to get excited and donate to something that isn't exiting and that I would never donate to. SS-GB is something I never expected to be anything other than a 'what if' and a such, I actually quite enjoyed it. I had to turn the volume up 'loud' to get around the lead actors mumbling, but hey this is BBC/EU Ingerlish so please complain - Brexit will sort!
I write this as it may provide another viewpoint to programmes such as this. Living In UK which was not invaded by the Germans during WW2 gives those that live there a certain view and obviously as others have said it is indeed a 'what if' scenario. However having lived in France for a number of years now and having an interest in military history, it does, give a different view as it is obviously a country that was occupied. The war memorials are more often than not carved with the names of civilians many of whom resisted, when moving through the country or towns there are signs that occupation happened, I sometimes feel "being here now - what would I have done then" and standing where German Occupying forces may have stood. In UK you cannot have those same thoughts except through drama such as this That said it does not make this drama good or bad - I wonder if this same thread would have occurred if one or two of us had read the book rather than watched the TV programme Blimey Gov this seems a bit deep to me - time for a glass or two of red TD
I read the book years ago. I don't remember being very impressed. Since I can't watch the BBC, I'll reserve judgment.
Just never get excited about what ifs, so much that did happen that could be told why do we need to make things up?
In spite of the BBC's best efforts, I was able to watch this first episode. I first read the book in the mid-80s and a quick revision showed that the episode (surprisingly) was quite close to the book's story-line. Both it and the book are a work of fiction based on an alternate scenario and should be viewed as such. I don't believe that it should be regarded as a 'what-if' in the usual crappy TV sense.
