    Hi Brian,
Thanks for your reply, how did you find the information about my Grandad? Are there only records from the Italian camp not from Germany?

    Regards
    Dean

Dean there is only one place where such information originates and that is T.N.A. at Kew.
There are also published lists of P.O.W. but only for Germany 1945 which give a prisoners Location at a certain date. What it doesn't tell you are all the other Camps he may have been in or what I posted.

As i recently found out, my grandad was sent to Stalag 1Vc after been in camp PG78 Sulmona. He was in the Durham Light Infantry. He escaped twice from his Italian camp and escaped again from Stalag 1Vc...during an air raid and this time he made it back home. His name is Leslie Howe and i think one of his mates was Les Green.

Hey guys, i have recently discovered a map with marked stalag's in europe on stand on show in plymouth, UK. while researching into the stalag IVc i came upon this site.

Most of the info around is correct about the site, though the names are german so it doesnt really reflect that much, if you research on google map into Czech Republic Look to city Teplice, then check town of Dubi, on the left side of the town you will found that there is hill, forested, but you will find that there are holes in the forest, thats where i think the Stalag IVc was. I think those gaps represent where the building standed. I am from the north part of czech republic and going for trip home from U.K. there and although i dont want to get your hopes high i am planning a visit on the site and get some pictures from there see if there are any signs left in the forest of the camp.

    Hi there, I'm new here.
I'm looking for any information anyone might have about my Great-Uncle, Bill Craig who was a prisoner in STalag IVC. He was killed during an Air Raid by the RAF in 1944, I think.
I would also be very keen to speak with anyone who has any information about another Stalag IVC prisoner called Gordon Boyack- he wrote a very moving letter to my Grandmother, to tell her of her brother's death and the funeral that was held.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks folks. :)

Not sure if it is any use to you, but you could try the Red Cross to see if they have a record.

Many thanks, I have sent a request for information. I thought that it was worth asking on here about both men, you never know, someone might have information.
    Cheers, DPas.

Just started on this website as I am going through my Dad's Pilot's Log from 1944/45 and trying to make sense of the entries. His final two operations of the war (numbers 95 and 96) were leaflet drops to 'Wistritz' Stalag iv and 'Annaburg' Stalag ivD/Z on successive nights in late April 1945. Fortunately he recorded the map co-ordinates for each. The aiming point for the first drop was 50.39N, 13.49E, which from Google Maps comes out as present-day Hrusovany, Czech Republic, and for the second was 51.46N, 13.03E, which is in woodland midway between Schildau and Belgern, in Saxony. I have a tattered copy of one of the leaflets he dropped if anyone would like a scanned copy. They contain advice to POW camp commandants and guards from the governments of Great Britain, the USA, and Russia, in the name of the United Nations, to look after their prisoners carefully, as anyone mistreating a POW will be relentlessly tracked down and brought to justice (if my German is any good). Good luck to all you other searchers out there!

    Hi,
I'm new to this site, so hello.

I wonder if anyone can help me. I am looking for details of an attempted escape from Stalag IVD in WW2. I am researching on behalf of a friend. He believes his grandfather, John Coombe, escaped from there but was re-captured. I have John Coombe's war record. He was in the Lancashire Fusiliers, POW No. 274571 and was still in the camp when it was liberated.

Can anyone help or advise me if the information on escape attempts is recorded anywhere?

    Thanks
    Denis

Quite often details of attempted escapes are included on their POW Liberation Reports. It's therefore worth checking WO 344/71/1 to see if he completed one

  18. Interesting reading. I have recently found out my uncle John (Jack) Rogers C company 6th Batallion The Lincolnshire Regiment was also interned there. He was captured in the 1st Battle of Sejanane in North Africa on 6th March 1943. He was also very cagey about what happened there although he also mentioned working down a mine. I have a ceremonial Kriegsmarine dagger that he 'liberated' from his captors on his liberation. He also had a bowl and spoon that he had in the camp, the spoon was worn to a knife edge where he had scraped every last morsal of food from his dish. To his dying day he would never smoke a full 'roll up' due to the scarcity of tobacco while he was a prisoner. One story he did tell was that they once noticed a donkey in a field near the camp, they had not had any meat for months, but that evening they had meat and the next day they noticed the field was empty and the donkey nowhere to be seen!! His prison number was 233971.

    Hi,

I originally thought the POW funeral photos in the attached link were taken at Stalag VIIIB but I obtained my relatives ICRC record earlier this year and it showed he was transferred to Stalag IVC in January 1944 so they may have been taken there.

    Hey everyone :)

I hope I can give you some general informations (including some pics) and maybe it will answer you some questions and give you some more impressions of Stalag IV C. First of all I started my research of my family ancestry two years ago. My family (forefathers of my dads granddad) lived for more than 80 years (around 1860 until 1945) in Wistritz (german). In this time Wistritz was an independent village. Today Wistritz - called in czech Bystrice - is part of the village of Dubi (German = Eichwald). My family owned a house DIRECTLY on the opposite of the soldier prisoner camp Stalag IV C until the end of the war 1945. In this house my grandfather (fathers site) and his father (my grandgrandfather) were born in this house.

They area around Wistritz is called Erzgebirge. It was famous for therapeutic bath (recreation area), ore mines and porcelaine manifactures. Wistritz was a "mixed" area (because of history) between germans (majority) and czechs (minority). Also my family was it. My grandgrandfather was german. My grandgrandmother was czech. Because of the people with there different cultures and also because of wartime things were really complicated and confusing that time.

About Stalag IV C: Beforehand I am sorry to say that I do not know or have any informations in detail about prisoners or personal stories of them. My grandfather (born 1925) for sure grows up next to the camp. He was 18 when he had to go to war in 1943. He died in 2005 but he never told my grandmother or his kids (my father and his siblings) any stories about it.

But on my research I found some pictures of the old main street of Wistritz including the main building of the Stalag IV C camp between 1890 and 1920.

Photo 1 - The main street of Wistritz (called during war Hermann Göring Straße, today Tovární street) ... on the left the house of my family, on the right the main building of Stalag IV C (area marked with blue arrows)

Photo 2 - The main street winter 2019

Photo 3 - The main street with the whole camp Stalag IV C 2019

    Photo 4 - The camp Stalag IV C 2019

Photo 5 - The house of my family around 1910 and 1915 (2 photos)

Photo 6 - The house nowadays

Nowadays on the area of the Stalag IV C there are many different small companies located using the buildings as depots. Here is also the wikipedia link for the camp Stalag IV-C - Wikipedia

By the way ... the area around the Erzgebirge (Dubi, Graupen, Bohosudov, Chlumec) is worth to visit!

Feel free to write me if you have any questions or any feedback.

    Greetings Michael
