I know there is a lot of POW interest on the forum, so you might be interested (startled ?) to know that a diary from a Private William Macdonald, who was apparently in Stalag Luft III, sold for £3,200 against an estimate of £400-600 at an auction in Edinburgh this morning...not to me, a hasten to add ! Somewhat out of my league (I was after something else, non military, which I didn't get).

    Macdonald diary

It started at £750, and there was some feverish activity with a couple of folks in the room and two on the phone - I believe it went to a phone bidder for the £3,200.

Another set of Stalag Luft III papers went for £550 (against estimate of £250-350) at same auction house back in September.

    Duncan Black letters

Don't know who either of buyers were, sorry, nor the seller - I did ask about the Black ones, but the auction staff were very properly discreet. I don't know whether the appearance of two such similar lots in an Edinburgh auction within a few months of each other imply any connection, or that there is more to come (knowing this forum, someone will probably pop up with more info !).

Hi, ta and Happy New One :) been nowhere really, just absorbed in other issues for some months, but maybe time to revisit some of my military interests...I finally got a scanner so can maybe stick up a few more interesting piccies and stuffs shortly.

Further to this...intrigued to see that this same album is again in the next Lyon and Turnbull sale on 26 May...strange...maybe the first buyer couldn't cough up, or the guys who bought it back in January have decided to resell it...estimate somewhat higher !
