You're more than welcome. I suspect it would make for an interesting walk along that stretch of the river. Elsegem is marked on the modern map below:

  2. Indeed, might be something we will look into for the future.

  3. Back to pick your brains if poss,

Just found a record on ancestry that states my gf pow records were held at Infantry and Army Physical Training Corps Record Office, Stanwell Road School, Ashford, Middlesex record office 23 (tried to google with little success).

Any ideas what this record would hold and where I could find it now??

    Many Thanks

    J.

That will be one for the PoW experts/chaps, not my area I'm affraid. My understanding is that all the PoW records are kept at Kew.

Can you ask the person who posted the information? I'd ask them how up to date the info is as they may be using an out of date source.

    Cheers
    Andy

  5. Thanks Andy, I know just the man to ask, ADM199.

A bit more info on the fighting at the Escaut. I suspect he is the battalion commander of 1/6th QRR but the citation is not 100% clear.

    Hi and Welcome!

I've done similar research into my Grandfather.

As well as his Service record as Andy pointed out, the International Red Cross kept records of all POW's. You can obtain a summary of these from them:

    ICRC POW records

If you do contact the ICRC you will get a reply eventually. I got an initial response telling me they would be quite a while due to shortage of staff but they did eventually come back with the German record of my fathers capture 21st May 1940. Good luck.

    Jo,

Can't be 100% certain of this, but I think Stanwell Road School became Ashford Hockey and Cricket Club in 1998. See here:

Sorry for delay in replying, I've only just seen this.

I'll have a look at it now.

  13. Should I resubmit or wait?

    Hi All,

Still not received my gf service records; I have chased them to no avail, do you think I should just resubmit it? (I'm in the belief it has been mislaid although they tell me it is being processed) seems a long time time.

I am no further forward in my research because of this which is frustrating.

Can they actually check their system to see it exists and is in process? Or did it just sound like they were brushing you off?

Not sure if these get entered into a system or if it is all manual paperwork.

Have you been waiting 18 months?

  15. Hi Wayne,
They said it def existed but I have been waiting so long that I'm sure it should of been processed, as you said it has been 18 months, just didn't want to resend if others thought this was a reasonable length of time.

Jo, I've heard it is about 12 months, but of course no guarantee. Our requests are secondary to those for Soldier's and their families applying for pensions, disability benefits and the like which is only right.

I sent my request off last November and don't have any records yet, though I don't expect to see them for a couple more months at least.

Not sure if anyone else here has recently received the Service Records they applied for, their feedback on wait time would give you a better measure of the current backlog time.

    Wayne
