    Hello,

I thought I would create a thread seperate to my own one about my own grandfather.

This is about a Chindit who is in the picture with my Grandad. His name is Stanley Wright according the the written annotation my Grandad wrote on under the picture. (Stanley is stood on the right of the attached picture).

Through the Burma Star Association I believe I have matched him to a Stanley Wright, service number: 4867791. (Could be a different Stanley Wright).

I just thought I would share in case Stanley has any relatives on this forum and wanted to see a photo they may never have seen of him before.

    Thanks

That Service Number has not appeared here before your post and he enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment from: Army Number Search Note the name, caveat: he may have a middle name. NT on name and regiment on the CWGC.

    JohnG505 Getting there......

    Hi LeoB

I've found a Pte Wright on a 74 Column Chindit flight manifest. Service number is incredibly close, perhaps an error on the flight manifest?

    Regards.
    John.

That's a great spot John...one digit out, but I reckon it's the same man.

Here is Stanley confirmed on the 74 Column nominal roll from the 7th Leicesters war diary 1944:

Wow, where are these documents available? I'd love to find one for the 2nd Leicestershires and their columns 71 and 17 I believe. Alfred Hassam who is next to Stanley in this photo was in the 2nd I believe.

Do you have the full manifest?

In terms of the nominal rolls, the 7th Leicesters is the only Chindit battalion that has one in their respective 1944 War diary. The 1st South Staffs have a decent collation of names in their diary, but nothing like the 7 Leicesters.

In regards to the flight manifests for the airborne invasion of Burma on Operation Thursday. These were released by the India National Archives and discovered on their website www.abhilekh-patal.in

See this thread on the forum for more information: The Indian National Archives - Abhilekh-Patal.in - Recent Updates

Sadly, with the 2nd Leicesters being part of 16 Brigade, no manifests exist because they marched into Burma in Febraury that year.

Here is a photograph I have from the collection of one of the soldier's listed (Charlie Richards) on the 74 Column manifest. I only just came into possession of this nominated photograph after the Chindit Society had presented Charlie with a copy of his fly-in manifest (thanks to the help of forum member JohnG505) back in late March. Perhaps Stanley Wright is present in the image?

He just may be, that's fascinating thank you. I am going to visit the Leicester Records office as they told me they have a lot on the regiment in Burma. I will report back here with anything I find if anyone is interested.

Thanks Leo. I would be very interested to hear about your visit and what they have available in their archive.
