T/14757190 Dvr William Hampton RASC

Discussion in 'Burma & India' started by Matthew Mockford, Sep 3, 2022.

  1. Hi,

A family member of Wiillam Hampton has asked if I could find any information on his service. William is still alive but his memory isn't good and he gets confused. The family believe he was Initially with the Seaforth Highlanders.

Either on route to or whilst in the Middle East he volunteered for transfer to RASC/REME and ended up in India/Burma.

He talks of recovering and transporting tanks.

This is written around one of his medals. T/14757190 Dvr William Hampton RASC.

The family are going through the process of getting his service records. Any help or leads will be very much appreciated.

    Hi,

The family should be able to get his records for free as he is still living. MOD have been known to expedite the process if a veteran is still alive. I would ask the family to request a speedy search for his records given his advanced age.

Which medal are his details recorded on? It sounds like a pre or post war GSM medal (or a gallantry medal?) as the WW2 British issue campaign medals were unnamed.

I doubt members will be able to identify his actual RASC unit on the details provided unless he was awarded a gallantry medal or was recorded on a casualty list.

  3. Thanks Steve,

I've asked the family to check the medal and they've described a GSM. They are going to check for a bar to see where it is for. I assume it's post war (?), due to the rank and number being RASC.

Thanks for the info on the Service records. I'll pass that on.

    Regards, Matt
