IIRC this subject is mentioned in John Ray's The Battle of Britain - in the chapter that also mentions the links between Trafford Leigh-Mallory, Sholto Douglas and Douglas Bader. There's mention of a mess dinner where this was discussed, and Bader said he would have no qualms about doing it. Conversely, there are no records of the LW ever doing it. OR "officially" british RAF pilots ever doing it.

I belive three foreign service aircrew were killed on the ground in 1940 by both Home Guard and civilians, Poles AND Czechs. The Fifth Columnist Scare making "untrained observers" wary of foreign-speaking people dropping out of the sky in RAF uniforms may have had a lot to do with this....

I remember coming across the memoirs of a South African pilot in the BoB a while ago on the net; "Snapper" looks to have been an RAF R/T abbreviation for fighter escort...? But was applied to ALL LW monoplane fighter escorts; "All" in the sense that when his squadron got their scramble orders and details of the incoming raid on the wing, the escorts had been mis-identified by the ROC from the ground as the "legendary" He113!

I wasn't sure if it was just a nickname for R/T within a few squadrons or it was R/T abbreviation throughout the RAF that Summer.
Snapper seems to be a very fitting name for a 109.

Well, in reality there only WAS one German monoplane fighter at that point in the war; the He113 scare was clever disinformation. I've got a reprint of the 1941 Sackville-Sneath "Aircraft Recognition" and it was STILL being listed as a front-life LW type as late as that...
