Below is a copy of the poster for an illustrated talk to: The Friends of Whitehaven Museum, The Beacon, West Strand, Whitehaven, Cumbria. Date: Tuesday 7 May 2013 Time: 7.30 p.m. "The Border Regiment at Arnhem" By Mr Stuart Eastwood (Curator, Border Regiment & KORBR Museum, Carlisle) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The traditional recruiting area for the Border Regiment was from the 'Twin Counties' of Cumberland & Westmorland in N.W. England. Many Cumbrian soldiers served in the 1st Battalion The Border Regiment during WW2. During the war this battalion became part of the 1st Airborne Division that took part in the battle of Arnhem / Oosterbeck in September 1944. Mr Stuart Eastwood, Curator of the Regimental Museum based at Carlisle Castle, is co-author, along with Charles Gray and Alan Green of "When Dragons Flew", the definitive and illustrated story of the Border Regiment at Arnhem.
Hi Jos, Could you remind me the day before please. After I missed the WW1 talk because remember I forgot :frown: . Regards Michael,
Hopefully, it will also be covered by 'The Whitehaven News' (local newspaper). These sort of occasions are really good opportunities to better understand wartime events. You have probably also seen the report in 'The Whitehaven News' of 25 April 2013 about the homecoming parade at Whitehaven later in May 2013 for the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (the successor regiment of the Border Regiment).
Hi Nadine, Thanks for posting I see that your Uncle was lost at Arnhem... Could I please have his name and also a photo if possible... Kind Regards Tom
I believe there will be a few people whose relatives were at Arnhem so you may be able to swap information. All the best.
hi there my uncle was Thomas Stanley warwick he was a gunner at Arnhem,it has been discussed on this site before, also someone did put a picture of my uncle stan on this site,i don't know how to do this .if you go onto my page you should see it
Stuart Eastwood's illustrated talk about the Border Regiment at Arnhem was a fascinating insight into the regiment's role in one of the key operations of WW2: Operation Market Garden (September 1944). Mr Eastwood made good use of official records, personal photographs and testimonies from veterans and their relatives in putting the regiment' role into the overall context of the battle. An interesting and touching part of the talk was the explanation of how the bodies of the Border Regiment soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of Arnhem / Oosterbeek had only been discovered some years later. They were able to be identified primarily by dental records and then buried in Oosterbeek War Cemetery. Among the 'WW2 Talk' forum members present were Deacs, Nadine Jesko and 'yours truly (sorry if any others attended who I missed). ............................................ Hi Nadine, Hope your visit to the museum and the talk was helpful. Wouldn't have minded being there because Jim was in the Boarder Regiment before he joined the Glider Pilot Regiment. Ironic that they were with the first lift too. I tried to see the photo as you suggested but there aren't any! I seem to remember seeing it before though..... But I think it was an old post from before the change over and chances are it will have to be uploaded again. If you want any help with that let me know. Great to see the photos ritsonvaljos. All the best, Parnel.
