Roy, Great pics (even if the first is a bit iffy!). I will get in touch with the Arnhem vet I met last Wednesday and try to have a quiet chat with him (although I understand he is reluctant to talk about it). I am ashamed to say that on my first tip to Arnhem I met a vet named Wally Walsh in the bar of the Hotel Old Dutch where we were staying. Seems to be a bit of a meeting point for vets and Wally was staying there too. Long story short we spent a few hours and many beers chatting about his experiences. He was a Provost Corporal and happily described himself as 'a real bastard' as a Provo. He was wounded and captured in Oosterbeek, never made the bridge. His medals are in the Hartenstein Museum. The shameful thing is that despite exchanging details I have never tried to contact him since. I don't even know if he is still alive. I would love to meet him again if he's still about. Mike

Ah got it. Who said that originally? Monty. What Manner of Men are those that wear The Maroon Beret! They are firstly, all volunteers and are then toughened by hard physical training. As a result they have that infectious optimism and that offensive eagerness which comes form physical well-being. They have jumped from the skies and by doing so have conquered fear. Their duty lies in the van of battle: They are proud of their honour and have never failed in any task. They have the highest standard in all things, whether it be skills in battle or smartness in execution of all peacetime duties. They have shown themselves to be as tenacious and determined in defense as they are courageous in attack. They are in fact, men apart. Every Man an Emperor
He also said this . Of all the factors which make for success in battle, the spirit of the warrior is the most decisive. That spirit can be found in full measure in the men who wear the Maroon Beret”. Field Marshall the Viscount Montgomery of Alamein
