The Labuan Memorial consists of 2294 names embossed on 33 metal panels. It was created to remind us all of their' sacrifices whilst POWs in Borneo, the Philippines and in the subsequent recovery operations of these areas in 1945. On these panels will also be found the names of men from Brunei, Sarawak and North Borneo. note: 8 images attached. The inscription on the memorial frieze, facing the entrance, says: HEREON ARE RECORDED THE NAMES OF OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH OF NATIONS WHO DIED WITHIN AND AROUND BORNEO DURING THE 1939-1945 WAR AND WHOSE GRAVES ARE KNOWN ONLY UNTO GOD One of the saddest aspects - when viewing these figures a little closer - is to realise that, due to events in Sandakan and Kuching, many (if not most) of these men are actually interred within these same walls and occupy 'unknown' graves. Images of all names on the 33 panels are now available. Video of Labuan Memorial can be viewed here: LEST WE FORGET Tony Buckley www.asiawargraves.com
