If you would like headstone photos from the Cassino CWGC Cemetery, just list them and I will get them for you next time that I am there. Same for Cassino Memorial photos.

Likely to be late Summer at this rate.

    Rob.

These chaps killed in the first week of Feb 44 were the result of 6 LINCOLNS going back into the line in the Sujo valley on the far bank of the Garigliano on 5 Feb 44.

46 Inf Div had crossed the Garigliano in Jan 44 and had steadily pushed westwards into the mountains beyond the spa town of Sujo. Having secured Monte Turlito and Monte Tuga, the two positions were overlooked by Monte Ornito and Monte Faito so 43 (RM) Cdo and 9 Cdo were committed to attacking these two features on 2-3 Feb 44. Whilst 43 (RM) Cdo secured Monte Ornito, 9 Cdo failed to secure Monte Faito further west.

As a result, 6 LINCOLNS received orders to assault Monte Faito on 7-8 Feb 44 whilst a Hampshire battalion from 128 Inf Bde attacked Monte Cerasola on their right. Whilst the Hamphires attack on Monte Cerasola was successful, the 6 LINCOLNS attack was not and, on 10 Feb 44 the Battalion was withdrawn out of the line. They had not been able to get any further than the lower slopes of Monte Faito. It was during those operations that Maj JET Pim was killed by a sniper.
