Since this thread seems to be devoted to courageous, holy men it would be churlish of me not to metion my 'own' Padre Sqdn Ldr Harding MC, whose reminiscences appear in my last post on another thread R.A.F. Units in D-Day landings on Omaha Beach.

They really are unsung heroes on operations....I remember the two I met on operations quite clearly. The stick (From Squaddies) they get and dish out does wonders for morale too.

I had the pleasure of meeting the Rev Kenneth Ward recently at Whitehall parade for the NVA. Ken went to Normandy to take part in the services in June, just 5 weeks after loosing his wife Peggy.

    A remarkable man.

The Rev Kenneth Ward, 86, who had served as a Royal Navy Lieutenant aboard a minesweeper off the beaches, told his open-air congregation at Colleville-Montgomery:
"Fortunately our only hymn is the well-known O God Our Help In Ages Past. Those that can, sing along, the rest, just hum it."

A few weeks ago, he was presented with a gift from the NVA at the last official service at York Minister. After receiving it he replied "I've not gone yet"

Maybe someone he knows? I don't know the ships crest on the left. Looks like they are Canadian though.

There was an interesting programme on recently( apologies if its already been mentioned) about the two Padres/chaplains in Afghanistan, both with the Marines I think (the UK ones not the US!!)-very interesting, one was shown out on patrol with them, no arms, just his faith.

Moving too, wish I had seen it from the beginning, and recorded it!!

The Ships Crest in post 53 is now carried by HMCS ALGONQUIN, DDH 283 built in the 1970s.
" This was one of the best badge designs produced during the war before ships badges were issued officially Of such excellence of design and appropriateness in suggesting this destroyer's activities in anti-submarine warfare, it has been accepted as the official badge"

I guess we have a WW2 sub hunter of the same name. Sorry to leave it hanging in the air but have an appointment with my vet and have to go.

Desmond Doss was a conscientious objector who won the meddle of honor during World War II. He is the focus of a documentary called "The Conscientious Objector". Please see The Conscientious Objector (2004)

This was one of the most fascinating documentaries that I have seen regarding World War II and Desmond Doss was one of the most fascinating characters in that war.

    I recommend it very highly.
