    He is shown as serving Achilles, phillicotes, as well as others but the only references I can find are the hms ships (Achilles) fought river plate etc

    Are there also merchant ships of same name, one ship is shown as sunk 4 days after the date on his cr2, would the date be joined ship so he would have been present when sunk?

    These are both Blue Funnel ships - this may help you - Shipping Company Fleet Lists
    The dates shown on the CR2 are dates of engagement so that would suggest he was on the ship when it was lost. What ship was it?

    Off hand it begins with M. Sunk off the east coast. menotes? Possibly

    Found it

    He joined 14.1.41 and this sunk 25 Jan 41

    He will have been aboard at the time. The ship's official log book which would include the crew agreement (list of the crew) would confirm it. The ship also came under air attack at the time.
    The crew agreement will be held in piece BT 381/1426 at Kew.
