Hi All, I just wanted to place this link up on the forum to emphasise the strength of our little community. After enjoying reading a recent thread about a soldier called Arthur Westbury, who as it turned out had lived in the same street in North-west London as my own Nan and Mum. I was greatly helped by forum member Tony56 in regards to the information available on Find My Past, in particular the 1939 Register, which is effectively a type of census for that year and the newspaper archives. From these, I found the first ever piece of documentation showing the names of both my Nan and my Granddad, living together in the same house in Kilburn. After searching the newspaper archive, I collected together the names of some new participants from the first Chindit expedition in 1943; obviously very exciting for me. From these newspaper articles, I have been able to conjure up this latest addition to my website pages: Three Chindits from Chesterfield Thank you Ray Westbury and special thanks to Tony56.
Thanks vitellino, I enjoyed writing about them. I once spent a wonderful long weekend in Chesterfield, when I was about 18 I think. I visited one of my old school teachers who had just relocated there from London.
Forum update to this story. The son of one of the Chesterfield Chindits contacted me yesterday to say that he had stumbled across his father's story on my website and had learned new details about both his parents from their time during WW2.
Another update in regards to this story. The younger cousin of a fourth man mentioned in the text, one William Beresford from Matlock, has made contact and informed me that his cousin was also a Chindit. It seems I may have to amend the title.
