I've put up an index file here:

    Geoff's WO 373 lists

The data is not all loaded yet, but it only takes a few minutes to generate each file.

The theatre files can be quite big - up to 4MB. There are five large files, (F2B, NW Europe, Middle East, Burma and India, Italy) the others are mostly well under 1MB.

The WO files are smaller. There is a blank column so energetic folks can fill in the page number from the 'digital microfilm' downloads :)mellow:).
The files are sorted by name, I'm not sure if this is the best option. I have not checked the microfilm order - it may be the same as the unsorted data order, which would make adding page numbers easier, but it's probably going haywire somewhere.

I've just tried loading one of the html files into OpenOffice - it works OK and is editable although when you save again as html you get a bigger file size (OpenOffice does not use Geoff's patent pending unbloated file systems). Not tried Excel or its OpenOffice version.

    Any suggestions welcome.

    cheers,

    geoff

I have uploaded all the data files now. The number after the link is the number of records in each. Links which are not active means I did not find any WW2 data in that part.

    cheers,

Absolutely brilliant, thank you very much for these Geoff.
If anyone wanted to add page no.s, would you be able to put them into your files?

I would have to upload them, to overwrite the originals. They could be put as Excel on here also. I've no particular preference, whatever is most useful. Not tried an excel conversion yet, think it's easily possible.
I might have a go at adding page numbers to one of them when I've got more time. That's when the problems will be found

It would be easy for me to undo the alpha order. I could keep the alpha version, might be useful for browsing, especially for those transcription errors.

Yes, I prefer your alpha order - as you say it helps with finding the transcription errors - and it does away with needing to know LG date and regimental seniority to have any hope in finding an image.

I've put the first 10 files up in unsorted order. I'll check later if they correspond with the order in the microfilm files. Will do the others tomorrow (yawn...busy day...), so either can be used. If the unsorted files are used to enter the page numbers, they can always be re-sorted later in a spreadsheet, if needed.

A list of units found in WO373, might help when searching the NA site as there are many spelling and transcript variations, for example:

    RECCONAISSANCE REGIMENT
    RECONNAISSANCE REGIMENT
    RECCONNAISSANCE SQUADRON
    etc...

Thanks Geoff, that will come in very handy indeed.

    Hi all,

It is so hard trying to find awards on the National Archive website, and obtaining copies of the records. And I am a little annoyed I find out about the two links below before!:(

Today I stumbled on some great work that Geoff Sullivan has been doing, namely: Geoff's WO 373 lists

This combined with the information in http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/136224-post1.html, is a great boon.

    Saves time and money.

    Gotta love it!! :D

I hope you've found the digital microfilm page. It's been linked before on the forum, worth repeating.

Downloads are free, but very large files. Then you just have to browse through the very large file to find the bit you want.

Please feel free to create an index to these files

Certainly did Geoff - this is an excellent piece of work.

    Very impressed.

Whilst cross referencing an award with the above search engine, I found that this award seems to be absent from this very good research tool.

How does one get in contact with Geoff in order to have this corrected? or by merely posting this, it will be picked up.

    The Military Medal

    No. 2966508 Bandsman Reginald Edward
Taylor, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
    (Princess Louise's) (97, St. Paul's
    Road, Walworth).

His citation was published in the "Straits Times"

“His great devotion to duty during bombing and machine-gun attacks was an example to all. At the height of activity he was exposed to great danger in carrying casualties to the ambulances”

If it doesn't appear on the TNA index, it won't appear on Geoff's lists, so it's not an error per se. These were intended to help those researchers who were trying to manoeuvre around the vagaries of the TNA search engine eg transcription errors, non-standardized unit names, etc.

    Ref contacting Geoff,

It would have been better to have posted on the above thread rather than starting a new one. (Perhaps mod could merge?)
Geoff would have likely received a notification of reply had you done so. As it stands at the moment, the standard method of clicking a username and choosing VM on profile page, PM or email would apply. Click on the above link and then on his username, or search the Members List.

    Regards
    Diane

Edit: WO 373 refers to the TNA Cat ref. which was placed online available to download for free - with no index. The National Archives | DocumentsOnline | Search Results

Edit by VP - Hi Simon, I merged the threads to retain D's reply.

    Simon,

Thanks for the update. There must be quite a few missing from the NA index. Anyone googling for these details will probably find your post.

    Cheers, Geoff

If I can offer a thought on transferring Geoff's hard work to Excel or other format.

Select the whole page (Ctrl+A) then copy (Ctrl+C).

Past into Notepad. (this removes html formatting inc the hyperllink), delete the page counter detail at the bottom and anything unwanted at the top of the page.

Select all again, copy and paste into Excel.
