Top 100 threads on WW2 Talk

One of the joys of computing is the way that one piece of info leads on to another.

I'm referring to the fact that once you enter something into any decent search engine, GOOGLE immediately jumps to mind, you never quite know where it's going to eventually leave you.

Whilst searching today for an old posting, I found myself on this particular thread:

Help wanted with identification: Kieron Hill 24/7/09
    Help wanted with identifications

    Go take a look.......

Where else on this planet could you find such a detailed and erudite discusssion based on a single Div Formation sign ?

This set me thinking, so I'm starting this thread entitled "Top 100 threads on WW2talk"

I'm inviting you to post your own favourites, giving both the title of the thread and the link and an optional reason for your choice.

If the thread "takes off" then perhaps we'll get one of the mods to organise a ballot to decide the winner, if the thread just fails to attract any interest then we can just let it sink into oblivion.

I would suggest that we don't limit ourselves to just one title per member and, with that in mind, my own first suggestion is given above. I shall now start trawling through the archives looking for other such gems.

Adam has often mentioned we should have a 'Classic threads' section.
I'm not sure how we'd do it.

Happy to pass this thread over to the admin to sort out or whatever, in the meantime I'll gladly take nominations here.

Very true. Last week, I googled "On a Portrait of a Deaf Man", looking for John Betjeman's poem of that name about his late (and decomposing) father.

    Instead, I got this.

Sorry everyone - that was very puerile of me.

Returning to the thread's intended theme, I think it's a great idea and will post here again when I have had a chance to review and assimilate more of the threads and form a view of which I think are the most deserving ones.

I'm sure many others will too, once they have had a little time to decide on their favourites.

I've so nearly started a 'what's your favourite thread' thread for a while now - glad someone else has.

I still like this one, because it rambled on rather tortuously for two plus years, but finally a hard answer was found:
Operation Market Garden (The lorry thread)

This one's a large part of why we exist:
Veteran looking for his mate's grave.

And of course, the shambling great Sherman thread (that I believe Kev regrets ever starting :D):
The Sherman Tank what an amazing vehicle!!
    There's a few others too.

I can build a list from the Web analytics of which threads actually get the most people dropping in from Google - might do that for a comparison.

Other good indicators could be posting frequency or duration of thread activity, exception made for zombie threads. Numbers, numbers, otherwise it will be a subjective popularity contest.

Can't be done on numbers - meaningless in this context surely.
    Only way is 'favourite'.
IF I did set up a classic threads area (and I've no intention yet) it'd have to be added to by subjective suggestions of mods & members, pretty much as the links are these days.

This thread might help a few new bods to check out some decent stuff they might have missed - I'll pin it.

I thought this one was a classic:

1941 Letter for Otto Stoiber - Delivery needed.

1941 Letter for Otto Stoiber - Delivery needed.

It was one of my favourites and demonstrates the potential of this forum and it's collective membership as a research resource to be reckoned with.

I'm inclined to think that participation in this process should be skewed in favour of the forum's longer-established members (which wouldn't include me of course). The advantage of this is that it should ensure that some of the older threads (and not just the recent ones that we newbies can remember) get the recognition that they deserve.

Let's not take this too seriously.
There ain't no nominations leading to awards, I'm against too much backslapping (regarding a thread or anything else really) and am never going to run a 'top ten', as I'd consider it divisive. (Someone suggested a 'forum awards' a very long while back... idea appalled me, what is this? The X-F**tor?).

Why don't people just name a thread or two they like/enjoy? Like Tom has.

One day I might open a 'Classic Threads' sort of area, but it's never going to be ranked, just somewhere people can pick up where 'the forum done good'.
This thread could be a useful first step towards that.

Good idea, need to be named. Automatic status on visits, posts or googled counts for little, it's what the members think of the thread - like the good examples given already (I have a classic thread elsewhere - it's buried)

Many good threads have been mentioned, and I'll add another to the mix. It's been quiet as of late but has always been a haven for the more esoteric vehicle discussions. Unfortunately, participation in the thread has been spotty at best for me, as I lack the requisite knowledge in this area.
