The BBC did a report on the 1-00pm news today, as the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited and laid their own wreath. There are still have another 100,000 poppies to lay with the final one being placed on Remembrance Day. Following that, they will be removed by the end of this year.

The aerial view of the Tower of London was amazing.

I did the same for my Great Uncle. Was delighted that they videoed it as I wasn't able to go and watch, and originally they had said they wouldn't be filming them.

Some volunteers from my branch of RBLWS are off to help remove them in November - they all need to be cleaned before they can be posted too!

    Robert,

I caught the BBC World News on TV at Lunchtime and saw the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh Walking amongst the Ceramic Poppies, with a Beefeater Standing at the Salute on a Mound.

    Extremely impressive sight.

Can someone explain this to me in a few words as possible?

I buy a Poppy for £25 and they plant it at the Tower with all the others. What happens to them after that?

You buy the poppy for £25 to be sent to you after they remove them all from the moat. So really you are buying one which has already been planted - as they are planting the same number of poppies, no matter how many people buy one.

They will be cleaned up and when one of our members asked how they would be posted, the reply was "Very carefully!".

The crowds visiting say it all, all over the news.

Encouraging the 'daft' intellects to come out of the woodwork to remind everyone they are still around.

    Regards,

    Hi all,
I went on sunday with the wife , we got there about 4 o, clock and the crowds were still vast . Took loads of photos and listened to some of the soldiers names bring read and then the last post which was very moving . Nick ross of crimewatch fame was standing next to us, i must say that i think our country has done the memory of the ww1 soldiers proud with this and all the other events . We also quickly popped into all hallows to look at the recce stained glass window.
    cheers

A very irreverent comment by me, but nevertheless affectionate and in no way implies any similarities to Queenie in Black Adder.

Muddy or much more representative of the fields of battle?

Another part of the changing shape of this piece of art, although maybe not planned in the same way by the artist.

Art is all about appreciation and symbolism etc so what should happen now, after the mud, is that the real poppies should be allowed to grow. That would be poignant, artistic and a permanent fitting tribute. It won't happen because some form filler box ticking Elf and Safety expert will come along and spray the area with whatever they normally spray it with.

.......and, yes, I do know that poppies are an annual self seeding plant and people would no doubt complain about the weeds when they are past their best.....

Would appear the lesser species have been out and about again - reports in the paper that people have been trying to pinch them. Seem to have failed. Brian

Did they read the names of all of those killed in the war, or just those who had poppies purchased? It was way too late for me to get one, but it would be nice to know if at some time my wife's great-uncle's name was called.

The Tower of London is commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. You can nominate a member of the Commonwealth forces who was killed in the First World War to have their name read out at the Tower in a nightly ceremony.

Every evening during the installation, the Last Post was played at sunset over the Tower moat, which was filled with 888,246 ceramic poppies – one for every death in the British forces in the First World War.
Thank you for your interest in participating in our unique commemorative event. We have had a phenomenal response and the Roll of Honour has closed as the required number of nominations to take us to the end of the installation has been reached.

Bugger...it looks like it is too last even for a nomination. I didn't even know about what was going on at the Tower of London until I saw it on the news. It did get some press coverage here in the states on November 11. I'll have to pay attention - perhaps there will be something else soon, or in 2018 to mark the end of the war.
