    Tracy,

The Long March Richard is referring too from all the POW camp's is covered very well in a book by John Nichol and Tony Rennell called "The Last Escape". Worth a read.

Looking at his service record, he was back in the UK on 16th May 1945, which is consistent with him being liberated by the Allies rather than going through Odessa, although some Russian liberations did get back quite quickly.

    Regards,

    Nick

    Hi Nick,
Not necessarily true - the first ships to leave Odessa with ex POW's was early Mar 1945 and many in April (I am working on a spreadsheet showing all the comings and goings from Odessa), so quite possible he was on one of those - note the last were in Aug 1945.

Looking through my various notes that I have yet to co-ordinate re Odessa numbers, the earliest records I can find at the moment show that for South African ex POW's that the position at midnight 18th March 1945 there were 2 Officers and 48 other ranks recorded as being in Allied hands in Odessa awaiting repatriation (in total there are 1834 made up of UK Royal navy, Army & RAF, Canadians, Australians, Indians, Kiwis, South Africans and what they have noted as 'Colonies').

Unfortunately no mention directly of a Morris - as yet
