Tributes have been paid to a war hero who fought in the Battle of Arnhem. Ashley Miles - known to his friends as Albie - was a decorated paratrooper who helped fight the Germans in the desperate battle in Holland in September 1944. Tributes paid to battle of Arnhem war veteran - Portsmouth Today
I note in the obit that it says: 'His unit was the only one to reach Arnhem bridge where they stayed until they ran out of ammunition and were captured. He received eight campaign medals and was immensely proud of the regiment.' So from this can we say he was 2nd Btn....although they were not the only unit to reach the bridge.....there was a L/Corproal TE Miles in A Company of the 2nd......the same man???? But in any case another sad loss!
Ashley Miles. R.I.P. You cannot help but have respect for such fighting men. Outgunned, outnumbered and surrounded. Fighting until the ammunition was exhausted says it all. Hero's to a man. Regards Tom

Hi AB & All, Yep looks like he could be Pte T E Miles 5381521 2nd Batt Parachute Regiment, anyway Ashley Miles R.I.P Again AM a sad lose for sure Regards All Tom
Stragglers from many units (quite a few Engineers) made it to the bridge as well as 2 para. Could be difficult to trace his details. I met an Arnhem veteran tonight in the Legion but he is apparently reluctant to talk about it so I didn't ask. Tough old sod though, handshake like a vice and still lively on his feet. RIP Ashley Miles. Thanks for what you did.
