What a character! I wish I'd known him.

There was a BBC radio programme on him on R4 earlier this year. It contained material, including recorded interviews with the man himself, which had been previously classified. It's probably still availanble on BBC Sounds

If you read postwar intelligence reports on Zigzag,it's indicates that Zigzag worth was questionable for employment as an agent..he was deemed to be a security risk after 4 months in the UK acting as a German agent in a double agent role.

.He landed in the UK by parachute in June 1944,after volunteering to act as a double agent for the British.Notice of his arrival by given by an decrypt of 10 June.He revealed his task was to collect information on Asdic anti U Boat equipment, radar controlled Ack Ack,USAAF operational plans,V1 accuracy and developments of might be termed ECM which the Germans suspected might be used against the V2 weapon. He was soon in touch with the Germans and provided deception on the V1 offensive and anti U Boat weapons.

His downfall came in October 1944 when he was assessed as a security risk and his contract was cancelled with generous terms. It was known that he had disclosed details of his work to a wide circle of his criminal acquaintances.Further, he had instructions to contact Brutus, another double agent, passing on money and a camera.Should he be allowed to contact Brutus and he himself be mistrusted by the Germans,it was decided that Brutus might fall under the same German mistrust....British intelligence could not afford the risk that Brutus, who was involved in the earlier FUSAG deception, could be suspected by the Germans as being under British control.

I love these stories, and even the Great Train robbers. Sadly they attacked the driver and he had serious injuries. They weren't armed.
Otherwise could have been a Robin Hood story except they kept the money for themselves.
I think some of them had a history of violence, but nothing like the Krays of the same era who were active in E. London when I was living nearby in Hackney
