Hi I have found my father tpr H Fox`s name in is regimental war diary 11th RTR he is listed for convoy duties and at the side of is name is the number 7931934 I thought this would be is service number but when I enter it in any web sights looking any service records etc it draws a blank is there any way of finding out what this number is if not is service number any help would be welcome Jeff
If it is his service number, then it falls in the range for the Royal Armoured Corps, which makes sense.
Full WW2 service records are only available from the MOD, you wont be able to get them from any website - if you are lucky you cant get little snippets from one of the genealogy websites but the majority of men aren't covered
Hi, You’ll be lucky to find a WW2 era British soldiers service record available on the internet - except those posted on the forum - as they are not in the public domain. You need to apply to UK MOD - Requests for personal data and service records: a detailed guide Steve
Check with The Tank Museum to see if a tracer card is available, they cost £5. The Tank Museum | Enquiry Charges and Available Services
Jeff, do you know with absolute certainty that the H Fox with that service number is your father - do you know that he was the only person with that name were in the unit? Also consider that it was not unusual for servicemen to transfer between units. If you read the application forms, as per the links above, you will see that you DO NOT need to provide any military details, just name, date of birth and death certificate, unless he was KIA, in which case a certificate from the CWGC site will suffice.
Thanks For that Tony I cant be 100% sure the listing in the diary is him but I remember him telling me about the convoy duties he used to do when he was out in the middle east with 11th RTR so I`ve put 2&2 together and hope I`ve come got it right Jeff
