'Big Vern', as he is known gives his unique perspective on the parade....its origins, how it is planned and its relevance today. Sadly the DM objects to my ad blocker and I can't read the story attached. However it was reported on the Beeb steam radio this morning with the interesting mention that HM had sent her regards to the four injured footmen "who had been attacked" which suggests that the blame is being directed toward the guards. The story seems to have vanished from the BBC news web site!

Trooping the Colour: Scaled back celebration for Queen's official birthday
The Queen's official birthday is to be marked with a scaled back celebration for a second year due to Covid.

This year's Trooping the Colour will see a reduced parade in the grounds of Windsor Castle, rather than in central London, led by the Scots Guards.

In 2020 the event was cancelled due to the pandemic with a ceremonial tribute performed at Windsor by Welsh Guardsman and a band of the Household Division.

It comes ahead of the Queen hosting US President Joe Biden on Sunday.

The monarch's actual birthday is on 21 April but her official birthday is marked on the second Saturday of June each year.

It is traditionally celebrated with a military parade near Buckingham Palace in which the Household Division marches carrying a regimental flag, known as a colour.

This year will see F Company Scots Guards Troop the Colour of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards through the ranks of guardsmen on parade.

The celebration will be smaller than normal and has been dubbed a "mini" Trooping the Colour.

But the military officer in charge of planning the parade said his aim was to create a "memorable and uplifting day" for the monarch, who has been based at Windsor during the pandemic.

Lt Col Guy Stone said: "Last year we had 85 on parade, this year we've got 274, plus 70 horses, so we're really excited about the event having grown and getting us back to normal for next year we hope.

"It's been very challenging, but we like a challenge. Covid has got a lot to answer for in so many ways, it's made this difficult but what we want to do more than anything is give the Queen a memorable and uplifting day."

Lt Col Stone, who serves with the Welsh Guards, is Brigade Major Household Division and was also in overall charge of the military arrangements for the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral.

It is the first time the Queen's official birthday has been marked since the death of her husband earlier this year.

The event will end with a 41 gun salute and there will also be a flypast by the Red Arrows.

    Nor is this
Soldiers arrested on drug and money-laundering offences
"Six soldiers and a veteran have been arrested on suspicion of drug, money-lending and money-laundering offences, the Ministry of Defence has said.
The MoD said six Irish Guards troops and a Coldstream Guardsman veteran were arrested by the Royal Military Police as part of a "planned operation".
The 1st Battalion Irish Guards are set to lead Thursday's Trooping the Colour for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
The MoD said none of the soldiers under investigation would take part.
A defence source confirmed to the BBC that items suspected to be drugs were seized in a raid at Mons Barracks in Aldershot on Wednesday.
The soldiers range in rank from guardsman to sergeant. Three of the suspects remain in custody, while police continue their investigations into allegations that all seven were involved in supplying drugs.
The arrests were the result of an intelligence-led operation, which started earlier this year and involved civilian as well as military police, the BBC was told.
As the barracks raid was taking place at about 06:30 BST on Wednesday, a house in Windsor was also raided.
Searches were also carried out at properties in north Wales and Northern Ireland, where a source told the BBC one of the arrests took place."

What cannons did they use for the 41 gun salute? Liked the large horse drawn wheels.

Royal Gun Salutes | Green Park | The Royal Parks

What time an 82-gun salute is marking the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in Hyde Park today
"There will be two major gun salutes taking place on Thursday 2 June, with one marking the jubilee and another commemorating the 69th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation.

Firstly, at 12.52pm, just before the flypast is scheduled to pass over Buckingham Palace, King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery will fire an 82-gun salute at Hyde Park.

Then, just as the clock strikes 1pm, the the Honourable Artillery Company will fire a 124-gun salute (with an extra 42 for the City of London) from the Tower of London."

    Dave 55,

In WW1 the British Army used a 13-pounder field gun, for reasons lost on me, that gun was used by the Royal Field Artillery (RFA) plus the Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) and an 18-pounder by the Royal Artillery (RA). See: Royal Artillery - Wikipedia and QF 13-pounder gun - Wikipedia

I have seen the Royal Horse Artillery coming into action and firing royal salutes twice in Hyde Park and three times in Green Park. A sight not to be missed (although most people do miss it).

The first time I saw them in Hyde Park they galloped into action in fine style. The guns were unlimbered and the limbers and horse teams withdrew. When the salute was fired the officers horse bolted and the trumpeter had to hand over his. All done with great aplomb and style however.

Not wishing to reveal my great age but I was present on the Mall on Coronation Day. Could it really be 70 years ago.
