I wonder if you fine chaps could help me find a series of books that I read when I was young?

It's not going to be easy and a bit sketchy, but here goes!

As a young'un in the early 80's I was obsessed with anything RAF and WWII in particular and had a voracious reading appetite particularly for first hand accounts of fliers like Hugh Dundas and the like.

I chanced upon a series of fictional books that followed a young British fighter pilot, from his learning to fly in a Tiger Moth through his graduation into Spitfires and the Battle of Britain, where he flew with Americans, through I think Italy and Malta and flying against Doodle Bugs in a Tempest or the like and shooting at trains and things with rockets after D Day. I suspect he went on to fly Mosquitoes too and I'm pretty sure Gloucester Meteors rightat the end of the war. Last I remember he ended up in the Korean war I think flying Sabres?

Additional to this, just to keep it square, he has a German adversary whom has a similar career path where they also come up against each other from time to time without actually realising it or meeting in person. The German pilot if I remember correctly goes on to fly 262's against bombers and if memory serves, which it might not, ends up in the same squadron in Korea. But it might be on opposing sides flying Migs, who knows!

The guy who wrote the books was an ex RAF chap (national serviceman?) but not a flyer and his picture in the back cover had him with dark hair and a moustache.

I vividly remember one of the American pilots the Brit first flew with in the BB went on to fly P51's; when they meet again the Yank says he's expanded to fit a P51 and wouldn't fit in a 'Spit any more!

So, there we go. I'd love to rediscover these books and read them again and this is a tall order trying to find them I know, but this forum is global with a knowledge base second to none, so it'll be a great place to start. Hopefully!
    Cheers,
    S xx.
