Working through the archive I'll try and identify the U-Boats and give them their own post on this thread with pictures. In no particular order.
When you look at how clean the radiooperator is , his hair is recently washed , well groomed , his uniform clean , the work area is orderly - a well posed photo. Surprised that the Enigma machine has made it into the photo. The date of the photo for U-124 is interesting - when she returned in Jan 41 she had osank only one ship - the Tanker "Empire Thunder" 5965 tons NNE of Rockall ( 59 14' N / 12 43' W ) , yet she is flying a lot of "claims" ? One her next cruise she was much more successful , 11 ships in all - the fate of the crews can be easily imagined.
U-123 - Reinhard Hardegen , see "Operation Drumbeat" by Michael gannon for a description of her participation in , and the outcome of "Operation Drumbeat" , the roll on the kettledrums which announced the arrival of Donitz's boats of Cape Hatteras.
