Hi all, Can anyone help with identifying what regiment my grandfather was in from these photos please, which I will now attempt to attach HA HA. I was told by his eldest son that he was in the Royal Artillery, Eighth Army and he came from the Black Country (Stourbridge) Worcestershire, now known as the West Midlands. He served in Africa, Egypt,Palestine and Italy, between 1939/40 and till about 1946/47. Thanks. My grandad is on the right in sports outfit on photo where he is shaking hands.
It certainly looks like a Royal Artillery badge on his Field Service Cap. There is a trade badge on the sleeve below but I don't recognise it (Not that I'm very good on them).
Jaylou/ Rich The cap badge certainly looks like Artillery backed up by the whit Lanyrd and srvice strip of what could be blue-red - BUT the trade badge looks very odd at elbow position and with what looks like the initial S all over it which I suspect was in tht photo but not the uniform - also the presentation officer at the football game looks like he is of the 15th Scottish Division which was never in Africa nor Italy - not all 8th Army Divisions served in Italy apart from the Kiwis - Polish - 56th Div and the three Indian Divs along with 5th Div - so it has to be one of those which his service records will clear up. Cheers
Royal Artillery. The officer presenting looks like he's 46th Division (North Midland and West Riding. I'm still looking through my trade badge book. Andy
Looks like he may have been in the 46th Division as the officer in the middle photo shaking his hand wears a 46th Division flash - the Oak Tree.
I can't get a definate match on the trade badge but the nearest I can find is Surveyor RA Class II and III.
Paul/ Drew - on using a stonger lens I do believe you may be right about the 46th Div owing to the Oak tree trunk being bent - however this contrasts with Jaylous thinking that he served in Palestine as you know the 46th were a 1st Army Division from Algiers/ Tunis then Salerno and a rest period in Egypt only before returning to Italy for the Gothic line battles - and we did wear shorts in Italy at times Cheers
I have only just logged on and on looking at tzhe photographs concur that the cap badge does look like RA and the officer does appear to have the Oak Tree badge. Regards Tom
