    Your are correct Tim.

Diverting off course and arresting the development of an interesting discussion, the subject of which demonstrated the ultimate struggle for power in the Pacific.

As regards Stefan's point there must have been discussion and news detail circulated on a "pass it on" basis from those POWs who had access to a clandestine BBC radio usually constructed on the camp with components bartered from the Germans. The real gen or griff was always a motivating subject for prisoners on the state of the war in a POW camp and I would think opinion and discussion arose from these reliable sources. The BBC news source was regarded as being reliable such that Germans civilians and certain military types risked penalties for infringing the Reich regulations.

Well you could always be a Hamburger, either the sausage job or a resident of Hamburg.

Just noticed that the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) has added 29 new English words or expressions.in common use in Nigeria to the OED...a language which is still developing.

And they were patently incorrect in doing so.

Still changes nothing about the correct spelling of proper nouns.

I find it quite humorous that you invoke nationalism in the response to my good friend, Owen, then have the audacity to accuse me of it when I make no charge to you other than to ask that you follow the correct spelling convention for proper nouns. You may certainly spell common nouns such as labour, colour, aluminium, flavour, or even harbour in the British way when indicated and I will applaud you for such. Vive la difference!

    Good day, dear sir.

Perhaps the year given is just wrong? Maybe it was Autumn 1942 that was meant? And there was just a typo or something....

Could be, but in October 41 the officers were moved to Warburg.
In 1942 however the camp was changed to an Internment Camp for families with English roots from Guernsey (Channel Islands.

Which would make more sense of the account - An English priest giving a speech in an internment camp. Interned civilians, especially if over military age, were given more freedom and he could have been visiting clergy
