    I think the Japanese Kaga class ship mentioned being torpedoed was probably the Soryu, but it was not hit by Ens G.H. Gay.

    Ens Gay is well known for being the only surviving air crew member of Torpedo Squadron 8, flying Devastators, at Midway. Gay was one only 4 aircraft to get close enough to the carrier to launch his torpedo but he missed widely and was shot down in doing so.

    Ens Gay floated under a seat cushion and watched VB-3, VS-6, and VB-3 land bombs on carriers Kaga, Akagi, and Soryu, resulting in their loss.
