This picture must have been taken from a following LCM as the "gate" can be clearly seen. The first two vessels appear to have something on the deck.
In Qui Nhon harbor a tug is assisting the freighter to dock. The LCM from which the picture was taken is waiting to take on supplies.
The next eleven photographs cover the 101st Airborne's replacement training course at Bien Hoa. On arrival "in country" members of the 101st would undergo a training exercise before joining their combat units. The "Operations" hut of the 101st at Bien Hoa. I suppose a few sandbags on the roof are better than none! The sand bags were tied in pairs with commo wire and slung over the peak of the roof to help hold it down. On our base the artillery would fire at all hours of the night and the concussion of the out going would cause small pebbles to run out of any rotten hole present in the bags and rattle down the tin roof. After a while the various noises of a busy base camp would become un-noticeable. It was quiet that got on your nerves.
There seems to be a lot going on in this picture. Maybe a tanker can fill us in more. M551 Sheridan tank, map on teh ground or perhaps checking out some minor damage?
A popular forces soldier from Tom Binh, Gia Dinh Province, is crossing a canal while on a patrol with elements of "B" Company 1st Battalion 16th Infantry st Infantry Division near the Saigon River. Popular Forces were South Vietnamese National Guard-type local military units. I missed this thread the first time around (don't know how) - interesting to see the WW2 vintage M1 Carbine in use, probably understandable for a second-line type outfit. (or is the fully auto version - M2??) Nice view of the two magazines jungle-taped together for a quick changeover.
US Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker visiting damage made to the US Embassy during the 1968 Tet Offensive. Ambassador Bunker is in the centre behind the man carrying an automatic weapon. Looks like another M1 Carbine in the background. No idea on the burp-gun in the middle of the shot though.
Looks like another M1 Carbine in the background. No idea on the burp-gun in the middle of the shot though. Looks like a short barrelled version of an M3 "Grease Gun."
