Maybe I should of asked first! Are we collecting T numbers & names for 13/18 Hussars of only 1944 or all vehicles that we can find that were used by the regiment?

A bit out of field. I've found a letter authority for AoS numbers and colours that is NOT in Hodges/Taylor. In fact, it is dated between the Home Forces Letter Authority of 25 Jan '41 and the next quoted of 31 Dec '42 being dated 3 June '41. It covers

    A. standard marking for divisions - but only has an Infantry Division.
    B. standard markings for Independent Infantry Brigades and Independent Brigade Groups - especially interesting!
    C. standard markings for Corps Troops
    D. blocks of numbers for named RAC, RA, RE, RASC, RAOC, RAPC, Provost, separate Pioneer Corps Salvaghe units and Miscellaneous Units.Presumably all Home Forces/GHQ units

The date fits because, allocated 150, is 2nd Household Cavalry Motor Bn which was formed 19/11/40 and converted to armoured cars 15/9/41.

The papers were in pretty bad condition when I had them copied by PRO. I've never seen another reference to this letter. Is this the place to post it? I'll have to type the whole thing out as its pretty much black-out with that lovely browned paper!

    TANK RECOVERY AND REPAIR

    If it's a "12" - Could be "Twelfth Knight"

    Screenshot_20220809-201532_Samsung Internet.jpg

Although... from this comparison... I guess not... instead... it could be a "23"

  13. This is a Sherman I or II, whereas TWELFTH KNIGHT is a Sherman III.

Although... were a prior "12" - "Twelfth Knight" knocked out, the name and number could have been used on a replacement tank, albeit - only a "speculative scenario" - I think it see it now rather more as a "23" than as a "12" - but perhaps only the "2" is relatively clear. And even then such a number might be in the process of being rubbed off, if the tank were repaired, put in a replacement pool and given back to its former Regiment, or being destined to be used elsewhere.

    Hi Kevin

I've been away from this for a while, bit of this, bit of that, but I just had another go at refreshing my own attempt to track serial numbers and (I think) I have found an anomaly. T141524 BETH is smack in the middle of a contract for carriers TM.5662 for T141411 to 142967?

T141998 is a Carrier, Universal No 1 Mk 1 which the only individual record I have of a vehicle from this contract.

    Thanks Christian,

I will look into that. Within the Carrier range you mention I have 10 numbers, 7 of which are 3" Mortar Carriers, 141467, 141577, 141702, 141837, 141855, 141888 and 142104. There are obviously more within that range.

    Cheers

    Hi Tom

From your list of June for 27 Arm Bde Workshop.

Sherman DD T167672 is an anomaly. The range T165262 to 167831 was allocated to Contract TM.5660 for Universal carriers, specifically Carrier, 3" Mortar No1 Mk1. The T range with 157672 was for Stuarts which is a possibility. Any suggestions?

    cheers christian

Yes, it must be a typo by either original clerk or by me (which is not impossible!!).

The original photo is stored somewhere on an old laptop though so it will take a while for me to get back to the original.
