Someone posted this link on the il2 website. Captured: The Pacific and Adjacent Theaters in WWII | Plog — World news photography, Photos — The Denver Post
Some good images there, nice to see the Aussies get a look in Here is another image of MacArthur in a jeep in NG - New Guinea. October 1942. US General (Gen) Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander, South West Pacific Area, lights a cigar during an inspection tour of forward areas. With him in the jeep are Australians Brigadier Charles Spry; Major General G. S. Allen, Commander, 7th Division AIF; and Lieutenant General Edmund Herring (partially hidden by the jeep driver). In the jeep behind is Australian General Sir Thomas Blamey with other staff officers. This was Gen MacArthur's first visit to New Guinea
Hello Dave, I noticed that picture as well. Those Australians look ready to go. I had never seen MacArthur with a cigar before plus he is wearing a tie. He made it a point almost never to wear a tie later in the war, not even to the surrender ceremony. I don't remember his exact quote but it was something like, "We fought them in our khakis, we'll take their surrender in our khakis." You'll notice that all the other Americans at the ceremony are in khakis and tie-less as well. I also never saw a rifle scabbard mounted on the cowl like in that picture. Was that a Commonwealth practice? Thanks, Dave
Both the Denver Post photograph and the one I provided from the AWM showed MacArthur with a cigar (taken around the same time??) Here is another shot of that early model jeep, obviously personalised by the driver. I'm guessing the rifle strapped to the cowl was a local modification. New Guinea. October 1942. US General (Gen) Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander, South West Pacific Area, speaks with Australian Major General G. S. Allen, Commander, 7th Division AIF, during an inspection tour by jeep. This was Gen MacArthur's first visit to New Guinea. Note the wheel chains for travel in hazardous conditions.
Definitely no tie-wearing in these couple of shots of MacArthur in jeeps - Philippines. 22 October 1944. General MacArthur and President Sergio Osmena set out in a jeep to attend the ceremony at the Provincial Capital building at Leyte when Civil Rights were handed over to the President and members of his cabinet. (note the Divisional insignia on the front of the second jeep, a Platypus over a Boomerang) June 1945 - General Douglas Macarthur, Supreme Commander, Allied Land Forces, South West Pacific Area (seated in the front passenger's seat of the jeep) and Major General G F Wootten, General Officer Commanding 9th Division (seated in the back seat of the jeep) moving off in a jeep to inspect Australian Army installations in the Brunei Bay area.
