    hi there

i found the above address on a letter that was attached to the picture i have attached with this post. This picture is of my grandad and I am really hoping to find out some more about what he did. When I was little I know my nan told me bits about what he did but I would love to know if anyone knows more about any of this area and this era. The letter is dated 2nd May 1942
    many thanks

Definitely a Royal Engineers badge on his Field Service cap. Set at a rather jaunty, non-regulation angle, I might add !

He's wearing khaki drill which suggests a Middle East posting.

Have you applied for his service records ?...If you're interested in this sort of thing then the best £30 that you'll ever spend !

679 were in France for the month of June in 1940. Do you know when he joined them and when he left them?

oh my goodness this is fantastic, thank you everyone! Unfortunately my nan and my mum are no longer around. The above photo I have of him has been in my home since I can remember, it was only yesterday something spurred me onto see what was inside as I wasgoing to add his picture to the family tree I have been researching. I remember my nan telling me bits and pieces. This is absolutley fascinating. I am trying to find how best to apply for his service records but I have to say the internet is proving information overload. Do you have any tips? I cannot thank you all enough, this search has been such an eye opener

My grandad served in the 679 Artisan Works Coy Royal Engineers which I have been trying to research. I have found there is a Royal Engineers museum in Kent which is closed for maintenance until July. I don't suppose anyone would have any information or helpful tips?

    Hi there

My grandad was in 679 Artisan Works and I am trying to find out a bit more on what he did and medals he won etc. I am in the process of requesting information via MOT but if anyone has anything. I have a letter from him dated May 1942. Attached is a picture of him

    Hi Kirsty,
I've moved some of your posts about your grandfather together in one thread, retitled it slightly and deleted the duplicates.

Could you please keep your general enquiries about his unit on one thread, as posting under different sub-forums or on threads relating to different units will only cause confusion and repetition of info in replies.

    Good luck with your research.

That's not a medal, but the badge of Combined Operations HQ.
    As depicted in the picture
The badge incorporates emblems of the three Services, a naval anchor, a tommy-gun, and the RAF eagle.
Note: on wiki page RE included in ops and the operations they did.
