    Sorry, what do you mean?

873294 reads as horizontal 873 and vertical 294 where on a 10km grid starting at vertical 87 and horizontal 29 this is the point 3km east from the vertical and 4km north of the horizontal.

    Andreas,

In Post 10 about the 6th RTR War Diary there is a single six-digit map reference, hence my bold:
There are a number of six-digit map references for the position of the 18th Indian Brigade @ Deir el Shein:

    1) There is a British Army six-figure map reference given for Deir el Shein: 876283.[1] Charley Fortnum has found another map reference in a RAF document later in July 1942: 876281.[2]

    2) 1 Armoured Div. reports ‘876280 now quiet’ (Deir grid). From 30 Corps WD.

Question: How far would 876284 have been from the 18th at 876281 or 876283?

The whole issue of the failure of British armour to the 18th appears in my research; others have written more. Clarity about the distance would help me understand.

[1] See pg. 2 in the cited report. See Post 14 by Charley Fortnum: Deir el Shein sources - July 1942 and 1 Armoured Division: report on operations in Western Desert | The National Archives

[2] In email 12/9/2013 with an undated typed document attached.

The accuracy of a six-digit grid reference is only to the nearest 1,000m on a 10km grid map.

This may help. The map is 1:250,000 wartime map, as would have been used by the troops. Black Cross = 876280 Red Cross = 876281 and Green Cross = 876284 although it would be better to show these as squares with a length of 1,000m centred on the grid reference.

    So 876284 is between 3,000 - 5,000m from 876280, straight north.

    Hope this helps.

    All the best

    Hi Andreas,

Missed this when it was first posted so not sure if you've already got 2 KRRC covered. All of my research is on Burma, but happen to have the 2 KRRC diaries as one of my grandfathers served with the battalion.

July attached, including a patrol report and letters of congratulation. Not sure what is going on with the forum at the moment but I've had to compress these files much more than normal, hopefully still just about readable. Will email them to you if not.

Thanks so much Martin! Sorry I took a while to respond.

Does anyone have the war diary for 2 West Yorkshires for the second half of July 1942? I'm trying to get to the bottom of what happened at Pt.63 on 18 July.

Also helpful would be 149 AT Rgt RA.

Just looking into the car crash otherwise known as SPLENDOUR.

Does anyone have the WDs for 1/1 and 1/2 Punjab, 3/7 Rajput and 3/14 Punjab for July 1942? Most importantly 20-25 July, and appendices if any reports on the fighting.

    Many thanks in advance!
