    Owing to the extreme cold, the Exercise was ended at 06.30 hours, when some of the men were suffering from exposure to the cold which was intense during the withdrawal in the early hours of the morning.

    London District held an Exercise ‘BUICK’ in which the Battalion took part. We suffered heavy casualties but No. 3 Company did very well in the NORTHOLT battle. No. 2 Company were also successful in mopping up enemy opposition in the area of Coastal Command.

    The Battalion football team were defeated in the Semi-Final of the London District Army Cup by TRAINING BATTALION of the WELSH GUARDS by four goals to one. It was a good game but the WELSH GUARDS had a very strong team with four professionals and deserved their victory.

    The Intelligence Officer gave a lecture to Officers, N.C.O.’s of 1 and 4 Companies on ‘Battalion Information and Liaison in the Field’. No. 3 Company returned from PURFLEET. They averaged 44% which considering the appalling conditions wasn’t too bad.

    A draft of 80 First Line Reinforcements including four Officers joined the Battalion from the Training Battalion.

    Battalion acted as enemy in defence against 6 COLDSTREAM GUARDS. The defenders were under the Brigadier’s orders, so the exercise was of no great value to the men taking part, but the Intelligence Section were given a free hand and learnt a great deal.

    Battalion had St. Patrick’s Day Parade at HARROW. The Earl of CAVAN presented the Shamrock and the Regimental Band (60 strong) played the Battalion to the service at HARROW. The turn-out of the Battalion was excellent.

    The Commanding Officer held conference on the ‘Withdrawal’ Exercise - with all officers and N.C.O.’s, followed by a Training Conference. No.s 1 and 2 Companies practised Bridging.

    1942 April Wednesday 1
    Exercise DRAGON The Battalion spent an interesting morning attempting to defend its “hedgehog” positions round NORTON HEATH 0422 against the advance of the 5th Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS. Battalion H.Q. fell to the enemy but was recaptured, and the exercise was closed shortly after. The Battalion arrived back in billets at about 1900 hours.

    Battalion H.Q. Exercise MacArthur. The Intelligence Section and Signal Platoon and Clerks practised the setting-up and procedure at Battalion H.Q. The exercise was set and directed by the Intelligence Officer and Signal Officer

    All Officers, Warrant Officers and Sergeants practised crawling under fire at HAREFIELD. There were no casualties and the experience was found more frightening to watch than to undergo.

    The Battalion attended a demonstration of laying Anti-Tank mines and setting up booby traps and other devices arranged by 562 Field Company, ROYAL ENGINEERS. Continuous rain marred the proceedings, but the explosions at the conclusion of the demonstration were convincingly effective.

    Battalion Exercise JUNIPER. No. 2 Company provided the enemy, and the whole Battalion moved out and returned by march route. The Brigade Commander attended and watched No.s 3 and 4 Companies in the attack.

    Preparation for Exercise PYTHON

    London District Exercise PYTHON.
    The Battalion moved out early in the morning to area HOLNWOOD where the troop-carrying transport was removed. In the afternoon they had a march of nearly 20 miles to BLINDLEY HEATH, where they spent the night.

    Confused fighting at odd places followed during the next morning, and in the afternoon the Battalion was moved to dispositions guarding a convoy route from OUTWOOD to THE GRANGE.
    At about 20.45 hours furious but exciting battles took place for the possession of the convoy route, which resulted in the clearing of the route for the convoy only 7 minutes after it was scheduled to start. The rest of the night was without incident and the exercise was soon closed.

    1942 April 16
    At about 0800 hours the next day the Battalion moved back to billets through LONDON, being the third Battalion on the Brigade’s single route. All diversions and narrows were successfully negotiated, and the Battalion arrived back in billets at about 13.15 hours.

    Exercise ROMMEL started.

    The Commanding Officer attended a Conference at Regimental H.Q.
    23.45 Hours
    Fierce but indeterminate attacks were made by the enemy [Home Guard units representing parachutists and saboteurs] on practically every H.Q. and vulnerable point in the Battalion area. These were repulsed.

    11.00 Hours All Officers down to and including Company Commanders attended a Conference at London District H.Q. on Exercise PYTHON. The Battalion

    Exercise ROMMEL ended, having cost the Battalion very little except some broken windows, loss of sleep and considerable inconvenience.

    Exercise BURNHAM against 3rd Battalion WELSH GUARDS. The Commanding Officer directed and Major L.D. MURPHY M.C. commanded the Battalion. Contact was made early with the enemy and maintained until orders were received to move out at about 23.00 hours.

    The Battalion then made a night move to DROPMORE and succeeded in removing petrol from the dump which was its objective.

    No. 4 Company distinguished itself by forcing its way through a thick wood on a compass bearing, and the exercise was claimed as a victory for the Battalion

    Battalion arrived back in billets.

    Battalion took part in River Crossing Exercise with 562 Field Company, ROYAL ENGINEERS. A non-tactical march was made to the harbouring area, with the majority of the Battalion in threes. The Pipes marched with each Company in turn. Orders were issued late in the afternoon, and all reconnaissance was completed by dusk.

    23.00 Hours
    Everything was prepared for a crossing at 23.00 hours, but this was not ordered until first light. Instead, companies were given the opportunity of a comfortable night’s sleep.
    06.30 Hours
    The crossing was made at 06.30 hours without casualties and completed at 07.00 hours, and the Battalion was ordered to close on the north side of the river at the place where the 562 Field Company ROYAL ENGINEERS were putting over their folding boat bridge.
    10.45 Hours
    The proceedings were considerably enlivened by an attack by a Spitfire Squadron, shortly after which the Battalion Transport was driven across the bridge and the Battalion returned to billets by Motor Transport.

    The Battalion moved out to a concentration area in WEST WYCOMBE in preparation for exercise SAPPER.

    The Battalion with attached troops under command moved at top speed to the general line of road WALLINGFORD-STREATLEY, to cover the occupation of a defensive position by the remainder of 33 GUARDS INDEPENDENT BRIGADE on the EAST side of the river. The main position was held until 20.00 hours, but the constant attacks of the enemy were increasingly effective, and by 23.00 hours the battalion was across the THAMES, minus two Companies of casualties, but with their task achieved.

    The Battalion saw the film ‘Next of Kin’. It was an excellent film which taught the value of security in such an interesting and entertaining way that all who saw it could not fail to learn its lesson.

    The Battalion took part (as the invading enemy) in the GENESIS Exercise, LONDON. All who participated including the defending HOME GUARD did so with great gusto. The scheme however was over in 3 1/2 hours, and it is too early yet to learn the lessons from it. The Commanding Officer, with officers not on the ‘GENESIS’ Exercise, attended Conference re ‘SAPPER’ Exercise at RICKMANSWORTH.

    The Commanding Officer attended Demonstration of Battle Drill at the LONDON District School of Tactics, PIRBRIGHT.

    The Commanding Officer held conference with all officers and N.C.O.’s re Exercise ‘SAPPER’. The death was announced following an operation of Company Sergeant-Major P. MURPHY. A board of officers under Major POLE-CAREW held Audit on Battalion funds for the previous quarter ending 31 March 1942.

This was only a short course but the improvement in the shooting was very obvious.

    G.O.C. paid and informal farewell visit to the Battalion and watched them training on NORTHWOOD GOLF COURSE. The Advance Party to MORTEHOE CAMP, DEVON under Captain J.D. McCARTHY left by road. All officers and N.C.O.’s were given a security lecture by Sergeant APLEY of the F.S.P. at the Education Centre. Captain A.S. LOCKWOOD was appointed Second-in-Command with paid acting rank of Major with effect from 23 May 1942. Lieutenants R. BELLORD and Lieutenant G.E. FISHER-ROWE were appointed Acting Captains with effect from 18 April 1942 and 8 April 1942 respectively.

    The main rail party of Battalion arrived MORTEHOE Station, and were marched to the camp by Pipers. The early hour and the cold depressing weather did not improve the appearance of the camp, and the advance party who had been taking over from the previous occupants since 28 May 1942 told alarming tales of days of ? and terrific winds, and nights spent in erecting blown down tents. Tents were speedily allotted and the process of settling in began. The road party, consisting of all Motor Transport, stores and equipment arrived at 17.00 hours and the baggage by train at 19.00 hours.

    This day was spent in completing the organisation of the camp. There was a miraculous change in the weather, and we were favoured with glorious sunshine, which completely improved everyone’s outlook on camp life. Companies confined their training periods to weapon cleaning, Physical Training and swimming at WOOLACOMBE beach, some two miles from the camp.

    A composite Company commanded by Captain BLOIS took part in a CHEMICAL WARFARE Exercise in the area OARE. The objects of the exercise were to practice detection and neutralization of an area contaminated by mustard gas, personal decontamination, and decontamination of clothing, arms and vehicles. The use of mortars, bombs, rockets and chemical mines were also demonstrated. There was not a single blister casualty.

    The Battalion took part in an Exercise called ‘PELICAN’ conducted by 8th CORPS, commencing 08.00 hours 9 June 1942. 33 GUARDS BRIGADE were in the role of a German Motorized Unit, and moved by Motor Transport to area CREDITON, to take up assembly positions there prior to an attack against the enemy (represented by a CZECH Brigade) on the line of the River EXE between TIVERTON and EXETER. The highlight of the Exercise was the crossing of the river at 03.30 hours on the 10th June by wading, owing to the late arrival of the ROYAL ENGINEERS who were to have ferried the Battalion in boats. The Pioneer Platoon distinguished themselves in this operation with their erection of ingenious rope apparatus to assist the men in the crossing. The Battalion was ably commanded by Major P.W.B. POLE-CAREW in the absence of Lieutenant-Colonel VANDELEUR who was indisposed, and they reached their objectives in grand style. The Exercise closed before schedule at 13.45 hours on the 10 Jun, and the move back began at 16.00 hours; camp being reached at 19.30 hours.

    This day was allotted for rest and Physical Training as compensation for the hard work put in by all ranks on Exercise ‘PELICAN’, and swimming and baths at ILFRACOMBE were again popular, although the weather was much cooler than the previous week.

    The weather finally broke and we saw the first rain since Monday, June 1st and everyone was hoping that it would improve, in order to avoid spoiling the closing week of the camp. Ordinary training was carried out and we were pleased to see the return of Lieutenant-Colonel VANDELEUR after 3 days absence owing to indisposition.

    A composite Company under command of Captain J.D. BLOIS was selected to take part in a UNITED NATIONS PARADE at ILFRACOMBE on Sunday, June 14, and R.S.M. GRANT held a rehearsal of the parade.
    1942 June Saturday 13 09.00 Hours Mortehoe A selected team of Officers and O.R.s who are to take part in an Assault Course competition on Sunday week, were put through their paces by A.P.T.S. Sergeant/Instructor TRIMBLE saw the WOOLACOMBE Assault course. After a night of heavy rain everyone was pleased to see the sun shining again this morning, with visions of more swimming and sunbathing.

No. 1 Company were in defensive positions on the Point, prior to an imaginary disembarkation, but No. 3 Company, who had been called out from camp, succeeded in breaking through and prevented this. The exercise concluded at 01.30 hours.

    No. 3 Company were allotted use of the BRAUNTON BURROWS Ranges for Field Firing until 12.00 hours. This day saw everyone busy preparing to close camp, and all stores and equipment were loaded on to the lorries ready for the move back.

    The road party left camp on the first stage of the long journey back to NORTHWOOD, and reached the camp of the 2nd (Armoured) Battalion, IRISH GUARDS at FONTHILL GIFFORD at 18.00 hours, where arrangements had been made for them to stay the night.

    Two selected teams from the Battalion took part in the Inter Battalion Assault course competition at WOOLACOMBE, and thoroughly distinguished themselves by finishing easy winner. The rest of the Battalion were delighted spectators, and on their return to camp, the teams were played in by the Pipers prior to the presentation of the cash prizes by the Commanding Officer. The weather kept well up to its previous high standing, by providing a really hot summer’s day, and everyone took advantage of the half holiday by indulging in swimming and sun-bathing etc.

    The Battalion said farewell to the camp when they marched down to the station led by the Pipers to board the special train back to NORTHWOOD. The long journey was uneventful and the train arrived punctually at 21.10 hours, to be welcomed by a big crowd of the local population, who were obviously glad to see them back. This party had been preceded earlier in the day by two smaller parties, namely the Carrier Platoon with their vehicles at 06.00 hours, and the M.T. and stores at 16.00 Hours.

    Captain G.P.M. FITZGERALD left the Battalion on being posted to R.M.C. SANDHURST.
    2/Lieutenant EARLS-DAVIES proceeded to attend a Street Fighting Course at the London District School of Tactics, London.

    The Battalion cricket team were winners by a very narrow margin of 9 runs in a match against HAREFIELD CRICKET CLUB, played on Mt. VERNON GROUND, NORTHWOOD. Captain BLOIS again distinguished himself by having top score of 32 runs.

    33 GUARDS BRIGADE were detailed to take part in an exercise called ‘GRAB’ from 30 June to 2 July. The Battalion left NORTHWOOD at 08.00 hours and proceeded to a concentration area in the area of WIDFORD. (Map Reference:- square 8535 - Sheet 96) arriving there at 11.15 hours. Hot dinners were served there at 12.00 hours and on receipt of orders from the Brigade Commander, the Battalion moved by march route to take up position at BEACHET WOOD (Square 9319, Sheet 107, approximately 17 miles South East of WIDFORD. 33 GUARDS BRIGADE were in the role of a German force called out the meet an invading British force moving up from the South East and on reaching LITTLE PARNDON orders were received to change direction owing to the enemy being known to be moving on a more northerly route. Consequently the Battalion moved to meet the enemy via HARLOW, and this town had to be cleared of the enemy before any progress could be made. This was done successfully and the Battalion took up positions two miles South East of HARLOW. Sharp encounters with the enemy ensued until after midnight.

    This was the second day of Exercise ‘GRAB’ and the battalion were in positions two miles South East of HARLOW, and at 01.00 hours No.s 1 and 3 Companies were ordered to proceed to HARLOW PARK (Square 9226 - Sheet 107) to relieve the WELSH GUARDS there. This was accomplished in spire of enemy resistance, but at 03.00 hours the enemy were found to be withdrawing and it was decided to move into the area of HARLOW. At 08.00 hours the Brigade Commander again ordered the Battalion to move - this time via MORETON (9825) - CHIPPING ONGAR (9921) and eventually to BRENTWOOD (0412). After a march of approximately 12 miles, the leading company ?bumped the enemy at KELVEDEN HATCH (Square 0117) and it was found impossible to advance further, but the opposing force, estimated at one battalion, were themselves contained in that area, and this state of affairs continued until approximately 16.00 hours, when the Brigade Commander ordered the Battalion to proceed to area HISH ONGAR (Square 0122) where a Brigade of enemy had been identified just North of that village. The WELSH GUARDS were on a line immediately South of the enemy and the COLDSTREAM GUARDS immediately North of the enemy. At 19.30 hours the Battalion moved again from CHIPPING ONGAR (9921) via FYFIELD (0125) to area of BEAUCHAMP RODING (0228) where active patrolling was engaged in until 04.00 hours, when orders were received from Brigade for a tactical embussed move to LONDON, which was in effect the end of the exercise.

    NORTHWOOD was reached at 08.00 hours on July 2nd, and all ranks were allowed to go to bed immediately. This they certainly well deserved, because in addition to the actual battles and patrols etc, they had covered about 40 mils on foot in less than 36 hours.

    All Companies held drill parades in Company areas from 08.00 to 08.45 hours. The few remaining third class shots in the Battalion, mainly composed of personnel who were away from the unit when re-classification was carried out in May, proceeded to SANDHURST for practice firing. This was part of a programme arranged by the W.T.O. to improve the standard of shooting of these men.

    Company Commanders and Second-in-Commands, and Specialist Platoon Commanders carried out a special recce of V.P.s with the Commanding Officer.

    The Certificate ‘A’ Examination at MERCHANT TAYLORS SCHOOL, was continued today, but the same officers as yesterday.
    Major A.S. LOCKWOOD proceeded to the Senior Officers School at DEVIZES to attend Course No. 17 for Senior Officers.
    11.00 Hours
    The Battalion was honoured by a visit from the Lieutenant Colonel Commanding the Regiment. He watched the Battalion carry out various demonstrations, such as Assault Boat Crossing as per new battle drill by No. 1 Company at HAREFIELD. An assault on a disused factory at HAREFIELD by No. 3 Company and the Pioneer Platoon, who demonstrated the use of Banaglore torpedoes to destroy a belt of wire.

    A demonstration of camouflage, deceptive expedients by No. 2 Company on NORTHWOOD GOLF COURSE at 14.30.
    The Signal Platoon demonstrated R/T communications from a Battalion Command Post, and the Mortar Platoon, Battery drill with telephone communications, and No. 4 Company gave a demonstration on the Assault Course at PINNER at 16.00 hours.

    The Battalion cricket team were hosts to the RICKMANSWORTH Cricket Club on MOUNT VERNON ground, and added to their growing list of victories with another easy win. The scores were:- Rickmansworth 82 all out (Lance-Sergeant EVANS 5 fo 27), 3I.G. 151 for 5 (Captain BLOIS 103)

    Church Parades were held for Roman Catholics and Church of England. H.Q. and No.s. 2 and 3 Companies Roman Catholics paraded for Mass at HALLOWELL ROAD at 10.15 hours, and No.s 1 and 4 Companies at PINNER at 09.00 hours. The Church of England of H.Q. and No.s. 2 and 3 Companies paraded for service at the EMMANUEL Church, High Street, at 09.45 hours, and No.s 1 and 4 Companies in the N.A.A.F.I. at PINNER at 10.30 hours. Voluntary services for Presbyterians were in the St. JOHN’S CHURCH, HALLOWELL ROAD, at 11.00 and 18.30 hours.

    An interesting innovation took place in the Battalion Education Centre in the form of an ‘American Brains Trust’. Some eminent American citizens and Army officials were on the platform, and the proceedings proved very interesting and were thoroughly enjoyed by all present.

    “A” Platoons continued the Battle Drill programme.
    No.s 3 and 4 Companies had the use of the HURLINGTON BATTLE RANGE all day.
    In a cricket match played at LORDS between the COLDSTREAM GUARDS and IRISH GUARDS, the Battalion was well represented there being no less than seven members selected to play for the Regiment. It was a thoroughly good game but unfortunately resulted in a draw owing to time intervening, but Guardsmen MURRAY distinguished himself by scoring 66.

    A party of Roman Catholics conducted by Father TOBIN, left NORTHWOOD to attend a week-end retreat at OSTERLEY.
    The Battalion cricket team entertained a team from MERCHANT TAYLORS SCHOOL in a fixture on MOUNT VERNON ground. The match resulted in an easy victory for the Battalion team. Outstanding individual performances were made by Guardsman MURRAY, who scored 51, and Guardsman BRIERLEY with 5 wickets for 19, and Lance-Sergeant EVANS, 4 wickets for 22.

    This was the day allotted each week for practice in W/T and R/T communications.
    Lieutenant E. McN. COOPER-KEY left the Battalion to take over the duties of G.S.O. III (H.G.) with “V” Zone Home Guard, London District.
    2/Lieutenant R.B.H. INGLEBY and one detachment of the 3” Mortar Platoon, proceeded to SINGLETON to take part in a demonstration exercise ther.
    No.s 2 and 3 Companies were allotted the use of the LIMEHOUSE Street Fighting Area for all day.
    The Pioneer Platoon left NORTHWOOD on a 3 day’s cross country march organized by the Platoon Commander - Lieutenant W.F. REYNOLDS
    The Sergeants Mess held a very successful dance at the HEADSTONE HOTEL, NORTH HARROW. Dancing was from 9.00pm until 1.00 am and music was provided by the Battalion dance band and the Pipe Band.

    The Battle Drill Platoons of No.s 1 and 2 Companies proceeded to PIRBRIGHT Ranges for re-classification.
    The few remaining 3rd Class shots in the Battalion, proceeded to PIRBRIGHT Ranges for re-classification.
    Several High Explosive incendiary bombs were dropped during the night in No. 2 Company’s area, but were quickly dealt with by the Company Fire picquet and caused no damage.

    Roman Catholic church parades were held for H.Q. and No.s 2 and 3 Companies at HALLOWELL ROAD, NORTHWOOD at 10.15 hours, and for No.s 1 and 4 Companies at PINNER at 09.00 hours. Voluntary services were available for Church of England and Presbyterians in the morning and evening.
    An interesting announcement in a leading daily newspaper was brought to notice, which stated that when the pipe band of the IRISH GUARDS marching in the field at LORDS while play was in actual progress in the in the recent match between the COLDSTREAM GUARDS and the IRISH GUARDS, it was the first time a band had played on the field at LORDS during play since 1917, when a band of the AUSTRALIAN IMPERIAL FORCES had the honour.
    Lieutenant W.F REYNOLDS proceeded to MYTCHETT, near ALDERSHOT to attend a course in MILITARY HYGIENCE, and 10 O.R.s of the CARRIER PLATOON proceeded to attend a course at the FORD MOTOR WORKS.

    The officers who acted as umpires on Exercise “HUNT” proceeded to ELSTREE to attend a conference on the Exercise.

    Today was the first day of a programme of intensive co-operation with nearby HOME GUARD units, as arranged by LONDON DISTRICT, and each evening and week-ends for the next two weeks, each company will send platoons to two HOME GUARD Battalions for the purpose of carrying out demonstrations

    4 N.C.O.s proceeded to the LIMEHOUSE Area, LONDON to act as instructors in Street Fighting to 384 Field Battery, ROYAL ARTILLERY.

    15 August 1942
    A Roman Catholic church Service was held at Hallowell Road, NORTHWOOD and also at PINNER to celebrate the ‘Feast of the Assumption’.
    The Battalion Cricket team journeyed to RICKMANSWORTH to play off a fixtrue with RICKMANSWORTH C.C., and the result was a draw, although judging from the scores, 3rd Battalion IRISH GUARDS would have been easy winners had time permitted. RICKMANSWORTH 117; 3rd Battalion IRISH GUARDS 108 for 2 wickets.

    16 August 1942
    Church Parades for Roman Catholics were at Hallowell Road, NORTHWOOD at 1015 hours for H.Q. and No.s 2 and 3 Companies, and for No.s 1 and 4 Companies at P? at 0900 hours.
    A Service for Presbyterians, Methodists and United Board was held in the Battalion Education Centre at 1100 hours.
    10 Other Ranks of the Carrier Platoon proceeded to attend a Course of instruction at the Ford Motor Works.
    The fortnight’s attachment with HOME GUARD units ended today, and the 8 HOME GUARD Battalions which had been visited daily, expressed their appreciate for the knowledge gained from the practical demonstrations.

    This was another practice day for W/T and R/T transmission within the Battalion and between Battalion and Brigade.
    No. 1 Company were allotted use of the No. 3 Range at PIRBRIGHT.
    The annual re-classification of Signaller was carried out.
    An interesting Lecture was given to all Officers on ‘ARTILLERY CO-OPERATION’ by Major COULSON of 384 Field Battery.

    No. 1 Company were on the HARLINGTON Battle Range all day.
    No. 3 Company were allotted he use of the BEDDLESTEAD Field Firing Range.

    A Concert Party under the name of “Stars in Battle Dress” gave a two hour Concert to the Battalion in the County Hall, Northwood Hills, and their performance was enthusiastically received.

    The BEDDLESTEAD Field Firing Range was used by No. 4 Company.

    The Second Round of the Brigade Tug-o-War Competition held at the Cavendish Club, EAST?, resulted in a victory for the Battalion team over the 3rd Battalion WELSH GUARDS.

    2/Lieutenant H.C. NEILSON proceeded to LONDON to attend a two day A.B.C.A. Course.
    A party consisting of the Anti-Aircraft Platoon and 6 men from each Rifle Company went for Hosepipe firing practice to the STONEY CASTLE Hosepipe Range.

    Church Parades for Church of England were held at the Emmanuel Church, NORTHWOOD for H.Q. and Nos. 2 and 3 Companies, and at PINNER for Nos. 1 and 4 Companies.
    There were voluntary services for Roman Catholics at NORTHWOOD and PINNER.
    1400 hours
    A Cricket match was played between an Officers’ team and a Serjeants’ team on the Mount Vernon ground.
    The Officers were rather easy winners and although the standard of Cricket could hardly be describeda as ‘first’ class, it was definitely entertaining and amusing.

    This was another practice day in W/T and all communications between Brigade and Battalion, and Battalion and Companies were by W/T and R/T.

    The HEDGERLEY PARK Training area was allotted to the Battle Drill Platoon of No. 1 Company until 1200 hours.
    No. 2 Company left NORTHWOOD on a Company March to BANBURY.
    They will return 1 September 1942.
    1400 hours
    The Brigade sports were held at R.A.F. Sports Ground, UXBRIDGE.
    It was an ideal afternoon for a Sports Meeting, and the large crowd obviously enjoyed every minute of it.
    The Battalion Athletic team carried everything before them, and at the end of the meeting were easy winners by almost 40 points, and Company Serjeant Major THACKRAH received the new 33 GUARDS BRIGADE cup from Brigadier J. JEFFERSON.

    Captain J.D. BLOIS and Lieutenant D.C. Compton attended an Umpires Conference on Exercise LUTON at Brigade H.Q.
    1700 hours
    A newly formed Legal Advice Bureau, for the sole benefit of personnel in 33 GUARDS BRIGADE, held its first meeting at 5 Dene Road, NORTHWOOD.
    1800 hours
    The Commanding Officer (Major J. GILLIAT) gave a Lecture in the Battalion Education Centre to All Ranks taking part in Exercise LUTON.

    Battalion H.Q. took part in a Brigade skeleton Exercise called LUTON
    The objects of the Exercise were:-
    1) To practise the handling of Battalion H.Q.,
    2) To practise Inter-communication,
    3) To practise the work of the Intelligence Sections, including Interrogation, and evacuation of Prisoners.

    29 August 1942
    The Battalion proceeded by March Route at staggered times during the morning to EASTCOTE, to inspect a tank circus.
    The object of this exhibition was to give some knowledge and aid in tank recognition to the infantry soldier.
    All the current British, Allied and German models were on show.

    30 August 1942
    Church Parades for Roman Catholics were held at Hallowell Road, NORTHWOOD for H.Q. and No. 3 Companies, and at PINNER for Nos. 1 and 4 Companies.
    Services for Church of England were voluntary.
    Lieutenant O.D.W. WALL proceeded to the London District School of Tactics on attachment as an Instructor.
    1400 hours The Battalion Cricket team journeyed to WATFORD to play the University College Hospital team.
    It was a very good game and resulted in the Battalion team losing by 10 runs.

    The Battalion Athletic team took part in the open events at the 2nd (Armoured) Battalion IRISH GUARDS sports meeting at FONTHILL GIFFORD.
    The Brigade swimming sports were held at HARROW Baths this afternoon, and were won by 6th Battalion COLDSTREAM GUARDS, with 3rd Battalion WELSH GUARDS second, and 3rd Battalion IRISH GUARDS third.
    Major A.S. LOCKWOOD returned from the Senior Officers School Course.

    Special Services were held this morning for all religious denominations to observe the NATIONAL DAY of PRAYER, on the occasion of the third Anniversary of the outbreak of war.

    After the Service there was a March Past - the salute being taken by Air Chief Marshal Sir P. JOUBERT DE LA FORTE, K.C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., A.O.C.-in-C. COASTAL COMMAND.

    Lieutenant D.C. COMPTON proceeded to LONDON to attend a two day A.B.C.A. Course.
    The Battalion took part in a Brigade Exercise called AIR.
    This was non-tactical but was for the purpose of practising troops in Aircraft Action on Line of March.

    The Brigade Signals Officer gave an extremely instructive Lecture, including use of the new Army Code Signs.

    Captain and Adjutant H.D.M. BARTON gave a Lecture in the Battalion Education Centre to All Officers, Platoon Serjeants and M.T. Drivers on “M.T. Movement”.

    H.Q., Nos. 2 and 3 Companies attended Roman Catholic Church Parade at Hallswell Road, NORTHWOOD at 1015 hours, and Nos. 1 and 4 Companies at PINNER at 0900 hours.
    2/Lieutenant G.A. JEFFRIES proceeded to attend a Street Fighting Course at the London District School of Tactics.

    This was the weekly day allotted for R/T and W/T practice.
    No. 1 Range at PIRBRIGHT was allotted to No. 1 Company.

    A selected party of Officers and N.C.O’s attended a Lecture at Curzon Street Cinema, LONDON, given by Lieutenant Colonel Lord LOVAT on the recent DIEPPE Raid.

    15 September 1942
    The Battalion took part in a London District Exercise called ADDER.
    The 33rd GUARDS BRIGADE were in the role of enemy and moved to a Concentration Area near WHEATHAMPSTEAD during the afternoon of the 15th.
    The Exercise did not actually start until the morning of the 16th, and at 1300 hours the Battalion left the Concentration Area by March Route.
    The Brigade moved on two routes (3rd Battalion IRISH GUARDS were Reserve Battalion) to seize and hold a bridge head over the River STORT.
    Approximately 14 miles were covered that day and at 1920 hours the Battalion were force to consolidate in area 7735 (Sheet 96).
    Active patrolling was carried out during the night and much valuable information about the enemy was secured by the Night Fighter Platoon.
    This is a newly organised sub-unit, and was a complete success.

    17 September 1942
    At 0630 hours on 17 September 1942 the Battalion moved off on the original route and reached GILSTON PARK at 1215 hours.
    This place was about 1/2 mile North of the bridge head over the River STORT.
    The area was swarming with enemy, but the Brigade crossed the river, then withdrew after dark, and re-crossed ear the following morning and succeeded in holding the bridge head.
    The Exercise concluded at 0930 hours and Battalion left this ear in troop carrying transport at 1130 hours to return to NORTHWOOD.
    The Commanding Officer returned from the Battle Drill course at BARNARD CASTLE.

    19 September 1942

    The following films were shown at the Rex Cinema, NORTHWOOD HILLS:-
    “No. 18 Wireless Set” (3 parts);
    “Know Your Enemy, (Part II); and
    “Housefly”.
    Nos. 1, 2 and 3 Companies and the Night Fighter Platoon took part in an Exercise called “STANMORE” during the night 19th / 20th.
    This was an attack on H.Q. Fighter Command to test the defences of the Garrison.

    The Assault Course at HAREFIELD was used by No. 2 Company.

    H.Q. Company beat No. 3 Company in an Inter-Company Football match by 6 goals to 1.

    No. 3 Company were allotted the use of the HAREFIELD Assault Course.
    The Sergeants annual Shoot was held at PIRBRIGHT, and about 100 Warrant Officers and Sergeants took park.

    The Commanding Officer held a Discussion with all Officers on Battalion Attack in Corporation with Army Tank Battalion.

    30 September 1942
    The Battalion took part in a Brigade Exercise called TANK.
    This Exercise had been prepared with the object of practising Forward Companies in the Attack in Co-operation with Army Tanks against Organised Resistance; special attention being paid to:-
    a) Speed of Advance,
    b ) Immediate opening of fire of Anti-Tank groups, and
    c ) Consolidation, including issue of tools.
    Tanks were represented by Carriers, and Nos. 1 and 2 Companies carried out the practice in the morning and Nos. 3 and 4 Companies in the afternoon.
    One Section of Pioneers and one Detachment of Mortars were under command of each Company.
    The Exercise took place in the area approximate 1 1/2 miles North of ALDBURY (4032).

    R.C. Church Parades were held for H.Q., 2 and 3 Companies at Hallowell Road at 0930 hours and for Nos. 1 and 4 Companies at PINNER at 0900 hours.
    1100 Hours There was a Methodist Parade Service at NORTHWOOD Methodist Church.
    Lieutenant W.C. CROWDER proceeded to Chelsea Barracks, LONDON S.W. to attend a Street Fighting Course at the LONDON DISTRICT School of Tactics.
    Lieutenant R.C. AIKENHEAD proceeded to SEAFORD W.T. School to attend a Course on the Anti-Tank 2-ounder gun.
    The Anti-Aircraft Platoon, commanded by 2/Lieutenant C.O. CUMMING also proceeded to SEAFORD W.T. School to attend a Course specially designed for complete Anti-Aircraft Platoons.

    The 3" Mortar Platoon proceeded to CHOBHAM RIDGES for practice firing.

    1425 Hours The Battalion was honoured by a visit from the C. in C. HOME FORCES, accompanied by the G.O.C. LONDON DISTRICT.
    The visit was short but a varied programme of Demonstrations was laid on.
    1700 Hours The Brigade Legal Advice Bureau met at 17, Chesterford Gardens, LONDON N.W.3.
    2000 Hours Nos. 1, 3 and 4 Companies held a very successful All Ranks Dance at the Headstone Hotel, NORTH HARROW.

    The Snipers at present on a Course under the W.T.O., were allotted the use of the HARLINGTON Field Firing Range.

    1515 Hours The Intelligence Section, under Lieutenant H.G. NEILSON, gave a Demonstration on the Handling and Interrogation of Prisoners of War at Headquarters, LONDON DISTRICT.

    0930 Hours Nos. 2 and 3 Companies attended Drill Parade at PINNER.
    Two Courses, arranged by the Commanding Officer, commenced today.
    One for the N.C.Os on Section Commanding, and a toughening Course for the Guardsmen.
    All the men in the Rifle companies do these Courses.
    With effect from today, H.Q. Company will be sub-divided into ‘Support Company’ and ‘H.Q. Company’.
    Support Company to consist of Carrier Platoon, Pioneer Platoon, Mortar Platoon and Anti-Tank Platoon, and
    H.Q. Company will have the Signal Platoon, Anti-Aircraft Platoon and Adm. Platoon.

    8 December 1942
    0830 Hours Nos. 2 and 3 Companies attended Drill Parade at PINNER.
    Lieutenant and Quartermaster R. HASTINGS proceeded to attend a Course for Quartermasters at the School of Military Administration, ALDERSHOT.

    Major D.M.L. GORDON-WATSON MC proceeded to attend a short Course at the Camouflage Development Centre, FARNHAM.
    1900 Hours The Regimental Band gave an excellent Concert to the Battalion in the Kodak Works Theatre, HARROW.

    0830 Hours Nos. 2 and 3 Companies attended Drill Parade at PNNER.
    2000 Hours The Sergeants’ Mess held a very successful and well attended dance at the Headstone Hotel, NORTH HARROW.

    12 December 1942
    No. 2 Company were allotted the Field Firing Range at HARLINGTON.

    Sunday 13 December 1942
    H.Q. and Nos. 2 and 3 Companies attended Church of England Church Parade at Emmanuel Church, NORTHWOOD and Nos. 1 and 4 Companies at PINNER.
    Attendance at religious services for other denominations was voluntary.
    Half of the Pioneer Platoon proceeded on attachment to 26 Field Company, ROYAL ENGINEERS for a 2-week Course.

    Monday 14 December 1942
    0830 Hours Nos. 1 and 4 Companies attended Drill Parade at PINNER.
    A party of 90 Other Ranks, commanded by Lieutenant WALL, proceeded to Mount Pleasant Parcel Depot, G.P.O., to assist the regular postal staff with the Xmas mail.
    This fatigue will attend each day until December 25th.
    No. 3 Company were allotted the use of STEPS HILL Field Firing Range.
    The Anti-Tank Platoon proceeded to LYDD for practice shooting.
    They will return on December 16th.
    This was the weekly practice day in W/T and R/T Communications.

    0830 Hours Nos. 1 and 4 Companies attended Drill Parade at PINNER.

    Wednesday 16 December 1942
    Battalion H.Q. Staff, Intelligence Section, Anti-Aircraft Platoon and Regimental Police took part in a Brigade skeleton Exercise called ‘ARCTIC’.
    This was an embussed advance to contact Exercise, and the main object was to test and practice communications on the move.
    The Battalion was commanded by major D.M.L. GORDON-WATSON MC.
    No. 3 Company proceeded to STEPS HILL Range for Field Firing.

    Thursday 17 December 1942
    0830 Hours Nos. 1 and 4 Companies attended Drill Parade at PINNER.
    STEPS HILL Field Firing Range was allotted to No. 2 Company.
    1000 Hours The Battalion was honoured by a visit from the G.O.C., LONDON DISTRICT.
    He spent some time watching the companies training, and inspecting billets.
    1700 Hours The Brigade Legal Advice Bureau met at 65, Reddington Road, LONDON N.W.3 for the benefit of all Other Ranks in the Brigade.

    Friday 18 December 1942
    0830 Hours Nos. 2 and 4 Companies attended Drill Parade at PINNER.
    No. 1 Company proceeded to HARLINGTON Range for Field Firing.
    1500 Hours All Officers, Warrant Officers and Serjeants who took part in Exercise ‘ARCTIC’ attended a Conference at Brigade H.Q. to near the Brigade Commander’s criticisms on the Exercise.

    0830 Hours Nos. 3 and 4 Companies attended Drill Parade at PINNER.
    No. 1 Company were allotted the use of HARLINGTON Field Firing Range.

    Sunday 20 December 1942
    Church Parade Services were held for R.Cs and Presbyterians.
    Nos. 1 and 4 Companies attended Mass at PINNER at 0900 hours, and H.Q., Support, 2 and 3 Companies at NORTHWOOD at 1015 hours.
    All companies at Presbyterians and Methodist Service in NORTHWOOD at 1100 hours.
    The attendance at Church of England services was voluntary.

    1730 Hours The Brigade Commanders, Brigadier J. JEFFERSON, gave a very interesting Lecture on ‘The Gallipoli Campaign’ to all Officers and N.C.Os.

    The Carrier Platoon Commander and one Section Carriers proceeded to the School of Infantry, BARNARD CASTLE on temporary attachment.

    0830 Hours H.Q. and Support Companies attended Drill Parade at PINNER.
    The Commanding Officer, Major P.F.I. REID and Lieutenant H.C. NEILSON proceeded to an R.A.F. Station at SAWBRIDGEWORTH for a one-day Course on Army Air Support.
    Lieutenant R.W. REFORD proceeded to attende a Course at the War Intelligence School, MATTOCK.

    Wednesday 30 December 1942
    0830 Hours H.Q. and Support Companies attended Drill Parade at PINNER.
    1715 Hours The Company Commander attended a Commanding Officers Conference at Brigade H.Q.
    The Battalion football team journey to WEMBLEY to play an R.A.S.C. team in the 2nd Round of the LONDON DISTRICT Cup, and were easy winners by 12 goals to nil.
