Thought this site might be interesting to some. WW2 Nominal Roll The Australian WW2 Nominal Roll is also a searchable database for "Places of Birth for ALL military services.. Select Place then Select the Service - Outside Australia - and the Place name you wish to see. If checking your Town or Village, could you please report your results in this thread and any interesting results. The results quickly show how accents and spelling mistakes made it difficult for researchers. You can search by entering England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Great Britain, Britain, North Britain, United Kingdom, even Isle of Man and get results. Belfast is an absolute "RIPPER". Plenty of mistakes to be made in spelling Northern Ireland. I did a quick one for "EnglandPhil" as "Widnes" came to mind and came up with 12 names. 11+1. Any misspelling shows another record. Very interesting site Geoff. Australia is way ahead in it's military archives, and I noticed this year just how highly your government respects and honours your veterans (compared to NZ).
Geoff, I just tried the 2 places I have family in Witchurch & Prees (bugger all live there - now) for a total of 6 records Regards simon
Very interesting site Geoff. Australia is way ahead in it's military archives, and I noticed this year just how highly your government respects and honours your veterans (compared to NZ). Quite surprising as I thought your Governments respect for veterans was on par with ours.

Quite a few from my town. Total of 100 in all the various ways of putting it, with or without county, commas, England or Eng etc etc Even 1 spelling with an E on the end . ??? Geoff, I'm sure you had a thread similar to this for the WW1 chaps, can't find it now. Did you post one or am I imagining it?

Geoff, I'm sure you had a thread similar to this for the WW1 chaps, can't find it now. Did you post one or am I imagining it? The WW1 was similar as it showed how many came from a certain town or village and mapped them. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/prewar/26199-how-many-anzacs-were-born-your-town-village.html#post288010

I always wonder about this bloke, and how far he travelled to end up back near his home town.... Wonder if he was related to Willy?
Just placed a query for England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales etc. England = 7746 "Records" but could be 10 or 12,000 actual. These are only records - one record for example for Birmingham is 1790 Ireland = 1328 Mixture of Ireland & Northern Ireland Northern Ireland = 83 Irish Free State = 17 Scotland = 2652 Wales = 924 Great Britain = 50 Britain = 138 United Kingdom = 20 Nth Britain = 1 (Caithness) Isle of Man = 20 records however this is 80 people. Isle of Skye = 2 records (6 people) Jersey = 31 Guernsey = 26 Give up!
Can I turn this question on its head..... Is it possible to identify Australians who fought for British Regiments? Pete
Can I turn this question on its head..... Is it possible to identify Australians who fought for British Regiments? Pete NO! there are a few I have come across who died but nothing to make a comprehensive list from. Cheers Geoff
I just did a search on Geoff's Search Engine for United Kingdom casualties & put 'australia' in the ''Including'' box. I got this. Search results for: + australia. records found: 642 Very rough guide but lots of 'son of xxxxxx, of Australia' in there serving in British units.
One probable in the Somerset village I currently live in, as the surname is not unknown in the area. However, it doesn't specify a county - and there's another Timsbury in Wiltshire. WW2 Nominal Roll One from where I grew up: WW2 Nominal Roll Both my parents came from Whitehaven, which has 27 records, including a Cadet Midshipman who enlisted aged just 13: WW2 Nominal Roll Plus someone who apparently enlisted in both the Army and RAAF: WW2 Nominal Roll WW2 Nominal Roll Maybe he failed the Army medical but RAAF stores were less picky?
Both my parents came from Whitehaven, which has 27 records, including a Cadet Midshipman who enlisted aged just 13: So did my great grandfather John Woodward.
