My Nan watched this when it came out at the cinema in early 1945. She was not impressed, and told me: You would think the Americans had evented the Chindits after watching that film!

We didn't need to invent the Chindits, we had Errol Flynn.

    Ditto... and agreed.

Finally got to see it the other day and wish I hadn't bothered! Ended up (re)watching the BBC mini-series docu-drama from a few years back to put my head straight afterwards! (Mind you, last night I watched an Australian WW1 film ('based on a true story') that made it look like the ultimate movie ever made ... this DVD had a trailer for a film called 'Operation Dunkirk' that looks absolutely horrendous - a bunch of British soldiers (Parachute Regiment of course, plus a maroon beret wearing Royal Marine armed with Stens) tasked with trying to blow a bridge to assist the evacuation during the 'Battle of Dunkirk 1940' ... supposedly (also) 'based on a true story' (yeah right).

Thought the RAF bit (in the 'Dunkirk' movie, not the 'Operation Dunkirk' one! ) was quite good though (notwithstanding the Spitfire with unlimited ammunition!)

It's the "Lost Battalion", not "The Lost Division". And I agree, it was very enjoyable.

I watched "Darkest Hour" again last night on a DVD that I got from Netflix. I saw it when it was in the theaters when it first came out. Really good movie, but I must say that I understood it better with the English subtitles this time.

As odd as it may sound, we all had more trouble understanding English English-speakers than we did Dutch English-speakers when we were over there last month. I guess it was because most of the Dutch spoke English with more of an American-sounding accent than a British one.

I had no real trouble understanding Owen and his family when we sat and talked with them. The odd word or phrase, but by and large he and his family's accent were not so thick as to leave me wondering what the heck they were saying, as I experienced several times talking to waiters, ticket takers, and the like.

I tried to moderate my South Alabama accent while on the trip and the Dutch I asked if they could determine where I lived, all thought I was a Texan. Perish the thought. I guess it could have been worse and thought I was from Joisey. I explained to them that the Texas accent was more broad and that they are more full of themselves. ;-) Of course, none of them knew exactly where Alabama is, so I guess I could cut them some slack. After all, other that South Holland and Limburg, I don't know any of the provinces there.

In reference to seeing "Darkest Hour" again (w/English Subtitles), I just read on Wiki that Gary Oldman has said that there is talk of a sequel to Darkest Hour that could also include President Franklin D. Roosevelt (who had been voiced by David Strathairnin in Darkest Hour) and take place during the Yalta Conference in 1945. Not sure what they'd call this movie, but I'll go see it when it's released, and follow it up with a DVD copy from Netflix, complete with English subtitles!

Thinking about the alleged sequel, I'd rather see the conference set in Washington during Churchill's visit in December 1941-January 1942 as the story line. Later on, maybe the Casablanca Conference, the Tehran Conference and maybe the others before Yalta. It could be a nice franchise, like the first Star Wars Trilogy was. You'd have to have the same writers, director, producers and actors to pull it off, so maybe all that is a stretch.

First time I watched the whole thing since I was a kid.

Very good. Good story and character development and pretty close to the facts. Not too much rah rah.
