I have come across a reference to a location for Ryder Flares within a coastal gun battery. I'm assuming they were some kind of flare to illuminate a target. Can anyone give me some detail on what they were, how and when they were used and perhaps even a WW2 photo please?
The History of Coast Artillery in the British Army Mentioned here in the History of Coastal Artillery. Essentially magnesium flares lit in front of polished metal reflectors to provide illumination.
