When did WW2 end with Japan and for the Marines. A few surprises here. From Okinawa to ...............? Read on: http://www.grunt.com/scuttlebutt/corps-sto.../ww2/lesson.asp
I knew about this. The Marines had a difficult time in North China in that deployment, caught between two fires in a civil war. The only good part was entering Tientsin, which had a fine red-light district. A lot of Japanese units refused to give in or were simply isolated by the surrender. The British had to launch "Operation Calendar" after V-J Day, attacking small Japanese positions in Indonesia, the islands off Burma, and similar sites, tearing up defenders who refused to surrender, out of Bushido spirit or lousy communications. Some surrenders were still being accepted as late as November. And of course, we know about Lt. Hiroo Onoda, who held out in the Philippines until 1974.
