Whilst breakfasting this morning I heard a brief snatch on the news regarding the age at which youngsters have started smoking these days.

I looked in the Times and found a small article that was headlined "Children start smoking at rate of 600 a day" and saw that the ages were between 11 & 15.

My first reaction was "So what's new ?" but it started me exploring and I soon found this enlightening article published by ASH in July this year
    http://ash.org.uk/files/documents/ASH_108.pdf

I thought we must have discussed this subject before and sure enough I found the following dated 2007.
    WW2 Cigarettes
    and also this
Cigarette issue, Troops, For the use of in 2009

This is what I had to say then:
I stopped to consider when I had started smoking and I reckon I must have been all of 11 years old. My tutor was the shop-boy in my Dad's factory and I remember that it was a most foul experience !

To bring this up todate, once I was demobbed in 1947 I continued smoking, mainly a pipe with the odd cheroot but the death by cancer of a young and talented female relative caused me to do some serious thinking and I haven't smoked for some 40 years.

When did you start to smoke ?

Or were you never tempted by the weed ?

    600 a day??????

I stated smoking at age 14 in High School, carried on through my service in the ACC and gave it up on Fathers day 1983 just before my youngest son was born. One of the best decisions I've made.

It was late on the 17th September of 1944 after my Tank had been knocked out at around 2:30p.m. that Sunday - and lying on the battlefield tending to my badly injured gunner - finally arriving at the

Seaforth's of Canada's regimental aid post and on being Triaged by some Sergeant as being in shock and bleeding etc - he stuck a lighted cigarette in my mouth - not knowing that I was an athlete

who had not smoked in my 19 years of life..and had vowed not to start…on waking up in the CCS next morning I found that I was a smoker..for the next 40 years until a Doctor assured me that my

lungs would heal on ceasing to smoke - lying toad that he was - I now suffer from C.O.P.D. brought on by that smoking and is sure to cut my ambition to live until aged 150 in order to get all my

money back from Governments via the pension routes…so my best advice is to NOT EVEN think about smoking OR stop NOW… as I can no longer fly to Europe in case I need the airlines Oxygen ...

    Cheers

If I catch my kids smoking I expect I'll get reported to social services for what I'd do to them . :p

Though they all say they won't as it's disgusting.

Once upon a time many films highlighted their actors actually smoking as they were sponsored by the tobacco barons - that appears to have gone mainly - but now they all run around with

giant coffee cups in their hands..no doubt sponsored by Starbucks of Seattle..just looks odd...

Thankfully I have never been tempted and now I still want to set a good example to our sons, so no way.
Not keen on 2nd hand smoke either.

    regards

My partner and I have smoked since the age of 14 and 16 though we both haven't touched a cigarette in 1 year 9 months. When we found out that my partner was pregnant we both stopped.

3 times in my life. All cigars and I was 17, I think. The last one I shared with my dad, which I believe was his last too.

    A filthy, disgusting habit.
