Could anybody point to the CWGC entries for the following 247 Squadron men. Carter, G.H 05/04/1945 Hamilton, H.K 18/09/1942 Lye, W.H 31/12/1944 (POW) Many Thanks Neil
Here's one: CWGC :: Casualty Details Have you tried the CWGC website? :: CWGC :: Or Geoff's SE: Geoff's 1939-47 Search Engine
Yup tried both, but with no joy. Lye's date of death is incorrect to what is stated on the memorial. Having said that there are numerous errors. Neil
Just found Lye W/O W.H.A. Lye, POW. Shot down by Flak Pg 129 Fighter Command Losses of the Second World War 1944-45. Norman L.R. Franks.
DaveB and I have found with RAAF lads that had resigned from the forces or been retired due to ill health and slipped through the cracks. I found no "HK" Hamilton in the entire database and no initials "HK" on any other name for the date 18/09/1942 for total Commonwealth. There are (10) for "GH" Carter however only one in 1945 which was RAOC on 13/6/1945. A google search only shows one HK Hamilton (RCAF) who was still flying in 1944 during the Normandy invasion. Cheers Geoff
I wonder if it is possible to track down a copy of this book to see if it offers any clues: Marchant, David John. Rise from the East: The story of No.247 (China British) Squadron Royal Air Force, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, UK: Air-Britain (Historians) Ltd., 1996. ISBN 0-85130-244-0.
Lye, W.H 31/12/1944 (POW) 247 Squadron Typhoon IB PD612 K Hit by flak crashed south of Munster. Wounded/ PoW.
Hi All W/O W.H.A. (Al) LYE was shot down with his Typhoon PD612 ZY-K in a wood called Finnenberg near Flaesheim, 35 Km S.W of Münster, Germany on 31st December 1944 by Flakabteilung 881 stationed at the sluice Flaesheim. After his a/c was hit he managed to use his parachute landed in a tree and was wounded on his face and hands and was taken to a hospital. In a local Historybook there is picture of him together with 18 men of the Flakunit who shot him down. Both were glad, the Flak men with their “seize” and LYE of course that he survived as he told the Germans. Is there anyone who has a photograph of Al Lye ?
