There is a common thread among all these controversies over the demise of famous Germans:

Baron von Richtofen .................Roy Brown/Wop May
    Erwin Rommel...........................Charley Fox
    Michael Wittman.......................Sydney Radley-Walters

Just tripped over this old poll looking for something else.

There may be confusion on who shot him down however there is no confusion on who put him underground.

Is it an ARFC tradition to dress like a bush at Funerals?

Or maybe some international confusion regarding German use of wreaths?

I was going to make a comment about the bloke on the right behind the bush but thought better of it!

Saw the Program "Who shot down the Red Baron" on one of the History Channels can't remember who the characters were , and the re-annactment with a laser , very Interesting , I dont think it will ever be proven what with acouple of regiments pot shotting away with their rifles as well ! remember it only took one bullet ! I'll cover my bets and say it was some 'Digger' ;).

Yup I reckon it was some Digger although i have just gone with the flow and picked Popkin as he had a good shot at him at the right time and from the right direction, but as others have said it could of been one of many men who were firing at the Baron.

I'm sure these artifacts have an interesting story attached.
The seat and various other parts of von Richthofen's plane have ended up on display at the Royal Canadian Military Institute.

My bet is that we will never know, but I would probably put money on one of the unknown diggers who were firing their rifles at the aircraft and got lucky.

I have a few doco's about the Baron on this question ... the bottom line of forensics stated that the shot came from the ground and to the right of the Baron because the bullet was intact and found on his body and the angle/trajectory of the bullet pointed to that location. The only persons on the ground to the right of the Baron as he went down, as reported by multiple observers and witnesses, were Australian gunners.

There was a discussion on another forum this week regarding the medals and awards of von Richthofen. I thought it would be of interest to show an image of these here. For more info on the awards and his life, wikipedia is as good as place as any:
