One of the No.1690 B(D)TF pilots I am trying to trace the lives of is a Warrant Officer Byers. Unfortunately, I do not have his service number or initials - all I do know about him is that he was detailed to fly some of the Unit's Martinets, from RAF Scampton to RAF Winthorpe, on 21st August 1944. This isn't much to go on, I know, but I'm hoping some of the ridiculously knowledgeable people on here might be able to provide me with some clues. Thanks in advance folks........ Andrew

Any other info? How do you know that he flew Martinet aircraft on the 21st of August 1944 - can we see the documentation to see if there are any other clues provided?

Would he be RAF or is there a chance he was RAAF or RCAF etc

HI Dave B, I'm horrified to think that l may have inadvertently mislead everyone  I've looked again and think his name might be Eyres, not Byres..... If my attempt at attaching the file works, please have a look and let me know what you think! Thanks, Andrew :)

Comparing the initial letter with other capitals on the page, I'd agree - probably Eyres.

Have you checked how many Eyers are in AIR78?

Sorry guys, I've been snowed under with other stuff but, thanks to help received from 'another place' it seems that a possible candidate is a F/Sgt R Eyres, who was flying an Avro Manchester with No.1485 B&G Flight on 11 Feb 1943 when he had to execute an emergency landing due to an engine failure. The reason that he is a potential 'suspect' is that No.1485 B&G Flight was renamed as No.1690 B(D)TDF in February 1944 so F/Sgt R Eyres could have still be at the renamed unit, and promoted to W/O status, some eighteen months later, in August 1944. Does anyone have any thoughts on this theory please?

It was definitely a W/O Eyres that served with No.1690 B(D)TF. I have just received a copy of another pilot's logbook and it clearly shows him flying with a W/O Eyres in a Martinet. No initials shown, but so far, so good!

Thanks dp_burke, that's a good suggestion. I won't add to this thread from now on and, in future, I will link any new posts as you suggest. Cheers, Andrew :)
