I searched the CWGC (through Geoff’s search engine) for other casualties that day. There are 12 RAF deaths on CWGC – 6 aircrew of 206SQN buried in Brussels and the test pilot Flight Lieutenant Seth-Smith. The other 5 were ORs, Sergeant & below, besides AC Wise the personnel were: AC Booth, Edgar Clark 1043525 / AC Hume, Hugh 1554179 / Sgt Mattinson, Anthony 2213724 / LAC Morrison, Kenneth 1049371 – all appear to be buried in their home towns.

I was wondering if any of these deaths were linked to one multi-fatality incident or if it was 5 individual tragedies. So far I can’t find anything of significance on any of these deaths – individually or together.

He was not onboard the No.206 Sqn Liberator.

KL595 was transporting troops from the RAMC back to the UK when it crashed at Melsbroek.

6 RAF crew and 25 RAMC killed.

    206 sqdn crew

I have the copy of Williams burial records and according to the details of how he died it was due to Head injuries in Churchill military hospital (Headlington) Oxford

(Headlington) I think this is what it says writing is a bit hard to decipher.

My Uncle died in May 1946 in the head injuries hospital....Referred to on the death certificate as 'Military Hospital for Head Injuries, Holton R.D. Oxon'...The service records refer to 'Wheatley' The old Holton District and Wheatley are next to Headington. He had been injured in Germany in February and flown to the UK....effectively, his injuries could have occurred almost anywhere in the world. Service records might help as ours shows both home address and the BAOR unit where he was serving.

"Besides AC Wise the RAF personnel killed that day were" AC Hugh Hume 1554179 who died at the Bangour Hospital of tuberculosis &

Sgt Anthony Mattinson 2213724 who was found fatally injured with a fractured skull dressed in his pyjamas in his room at the Grand Hotel in Harrogate dying of his injuries in hospital

The cause of the death for AC Wise and AC Edgar Clark Booth 1043525 & LAC Kenneth Morrison 1049371 remains unknown

For Deacs - I presume that the copy of William's burial records that you have showing that he died in the Churchill military hospital (Headlington) Oxford came from a source in Cockermouth

It would be interesting to see if the records for AC Booth & LAC Morrison also showed that they died in the vicinity of Oxford

Hi Dave yes I got the details from the war graves death registration book that holds the records for death and burial information on William and the other WW2 deaths that are buried in Cockermouth.

I really do need to do more research on the WW2 deaths from Cockermouth but one thing and another and now with the situation now I have just been too damned lazy.

    Regards Mike
