Foreign Award Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star

Sapper Thomas Martin (2007779) 239th Field Park Company, Royal Engineers, 51st Highland Division

During the period from 5th to 8th July, 1944, Sapper Martin was in charge of a Bulldozer which was employed digging in tanks belonging to the 33rd Armoured Brigade in forward positions at Ste. Honorine, Normandy. Throughout this period, Sapper Martin worked under very difficult and dangerous conditions. The enemy frequently brought down accurate and heavy shell and mortar fire on the area in which he was operating, and he showed great courage and devotion to duty in that he continued to work in exceedingly exposed condition paying no attention to the prevailing conditions.
