I didn't know that the tractor was in the Pat's Hall of Fame!

I wonder if the ball Brady fumbled in the "Tuck Rule" game is there too??!!!

I can’t comprehend the mentality of the Colombian manager (who is an Argentinian).

He complained after the match that England played dirty at corners and cheated the penalty. His players were blameless and were let down by poor officials. He couldn’t understand why it took approximately 3 minutes for one free-kick to be taken by England.

He obviously thinks it is okay for his team to wrestle and rugby tackle the opposition at corners, and to stand in front/over the ball at a free-kick for 3 minutes arguing with the referee and trying to wind-up/head-butting the opposition players.

    Incredible.

Columbia when they played football were actually quite good. They should try it more often.

That's rich coming from someone who "stole" so much from England in 1986. For someone read "fat, burnt-out cheat".

I’m over in Argentina soon, TD. Do you want me to have a word with Diego ‘hand of god’ Maradona? He doesn’t understand what cheating is, he didn’t in 1986 with his brilliant headed goal (see picture) and still doesn’t now. A reminder (if indeed one was needed):

And for God's sake, don't let anyone looking like this provide room service to Harry Kane.

My old man dragged me to see Pele and the Brazilians play a friendly on Randall's Island, which I think was in 1964 or so and against England. I remember seeing "Goal" when it came out, still a great film. Perhaps because of that I still pull rather listlessly for England. I'd be more enthusiastic about England if it wasn't for the appalling yahoos among their supporters (fittingly, "supporter" in America also means "jock strap," that silly looking, smelly thing athletes carry their jewels in). Still, it's been so damned long since England have won the thing and they've suffered such a long series of disasters that I can't help but sympathize. By the way, Martin Amis has a hilarious 1981 piece on England and football in The War Against Cliche; he depicts the team's history in the 70s and early 80s as a psychodrama in three acts, The Nervous Breakdown of Alf Ramsey, The Nervous Breakdown of Don Revie, and The Nervous Breakdown of Ron Greenwood. (Amis on then-recent England catastrophes v. Norway and Switzerland: 'Of course, it is all too easy to blame Ron Greenwood.Yet I think we should blame Ron Greenwood.')

Mexico couldn’t quite get the ball over the ‘wall’... and into the net! :peepwalla:

I think we English are harsh on our national team. There are only 8 nations that have won the FIFA World Cup and England is one of them. Our record of wins is exactly the same as that of the much vaunted Spain and France, and better than that of the Dutch who have always in my lifetime been a nation of fine footballers.

As for the film Goal, I have always liked it (and possess the DVD). There again I am biased. The backdrop is Nunez playing for Newcastle United, my home town Club. US national and player, deAndre Yedlin currently plays for Newcastle United.

In this World Cup we have been watching a ‘New England’, does that help sway your support from listless to full-on?

    Best,

    Steve.

I would agree Steve. They have re-connected with the normal football fan, seem to be a fairly content and happy group with no egos and are giving of their best. They have also thrown the hoodoo of the penalty shoot-out. Can't ask for any more than that. Just need to give everything today to obtain a place in the semi-finals, as these opportunities do not come around very often.

We live in hope, Steve. Expect nothing and calmly hope for something.

    Best,
