Yes...... I know this is a World War 2 site, but I wanted to place on record my appreciation and admiration for the commemoration service presented by the BBC last night. Faultless and tremendously evocative.. Ron
Well said, Ron. A further episode this morning. BBC One - World War One Remembered: Passchendaele, 2017, In Flanders Fields
Nice to see that this extract from today's Guardian online editorial maintained the publications reputation for excellent factual research........... "On Sunday European dignitaries and members of the Belgian and British royal families gathered in the Belgian frontline town of Mons to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the mud-soaked tragedy of Passchendaele." Yes Ron, it was a very moving ceremony and well done the beeb for their coverage. Given the numbers involved, I am sure we all have a relative who was at Passchendaele. For me, my Grandad, James Myles, was in 6th Black Watch. They took part in an Two Brigade (of 51 Highland Division) attack on Steenbeek River on 31 June 1917. The attack raged for 15 hours during which 1 officer was killed and 8 more wounded. Whist 50 other ranks were killed, 234 wounded and 9 missing. For their bravery, the battalion received 3 MCs, 2 DCMs, one bar to a MM and 12 MMs. Grandad would later be awarded a MM during the Battle of Tardenois (Second Battle for the Marne), 15 July to 6 August 1918. For which the Battalion also received the Croix de Guerre. Gus
