Hi and welcome. Unfortunately a soldiers records are not held by the IWM and will need to be specifically applied for from the MOD. Once you have those it will be the National Archives at Kew that will have his unit war diary. There are details on applying for records on this site and if you can't visit Kew in person, some members will copy diaries for a modest fee. Good luck. Do yoy have any other details of your fathers service?
you need to apply here Get a copy of military service records you wont find anything about him on the internet you require date of birth death cert available here General Register Office - Online Ordering Service - Login £30
Hi Hutt. Many thanks for you prompt reply) I know the countries Dad was in and have his solders army book 64 service and medical details also his officers release book so dates in those two. also his G4 army book and officers release book
Once again appreciate the help its unfortunate we live in New Zealand now but I can still telephone etc. The Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow have been closed (covid) for about 15 months now.
I have a copy of dad's file from the Force Armed Services website already. I will upload a photo of it shortly. I notice on the link for someone deceased it shows England and Wales online only? Does that mean I have to send the Scottish request overseas by mail? You say ask specifically from the MOD, so this is not the Glasgow address? Still unsure how to apply even if I have the copy of his service?
any idea how to source someone who will travel to Kew? I can do international money exchanges through the banks here.
Get hold of Gary Tankard on this site. He goes to Kew all the time and will be able to find what you want. Regards Frank
Hi Carolyn. Just for clarity, all of the information found in the 'file' you posted can also be found in the public domain (Notices | All Notices | The Gazette..., Army lists - British Military lists - National Library of Scotland) This information is restricted to officers only. To repeat what others have said already, you will not be able to establish an accurate history of your Dad's exploits in WW2 unless you get his service record from the MOD. Once you have his service records, you can then establish a timeline of where he went and with which RASC unit. Only then should you be looking for War Diaries. Hope this helps Gus
Hi Frank. Much obliged thank you!!! Hi Gus. That makes it a bit clearer) Just the Ministry of Defence website?
