I am currently restoring a Staghound T17E1 armored car. I am trying to find the insignia painted on the vehicle for the medium armored car units of the 2 nd Household cavalry. The only photos I have seen are very indistinct. Does anyone have a good drawing or photo of the original ? Thanks. Rod Shaver
Irish Guards Group, Guards Armoured Division, Aalst, 18 Sept 44 | WW2Talk This one is from my village. I probably have more on my computer at home, but I am at work right now.
Hi Rod, I know the names of 5 2nd Household Cavalry Staghounds GREEN KNIGHT HERCULES F225545 HERO HYPERION F225406 RED KNIGHT RED KNIGHT and GREEN KNIGHT can be seen on IWM film Belgian Brigade Arrives in Brussels. RED KNIGHT appears at around 54 seconds and is followed by GREEN KNIGHT, sadly neither show a census number but both carry 40 ( which I think is on black ) as the AoS and the All Seeing Eye of the Guards Armoured Division. I have tried to capture images but cannot from this film. I have attached a photo of HERCULES which sadly is a little blurred but census number and markings can be made out. Yes, that is a picture I have as well. But there is an insignia on the left front fender, blocked by the spectator, that appears to be a knight on a horse with a lance. That is the one I am looking for in detail. Thanks for the info on the vehicle names. I like Red Knight, since I am a red head!! No way of figuring out the census number? Thanks. Rod
Yes it is the 8 corps logo on the other fender. I haven't looked trough my other files yet, but I know I have one of it somewhere. Same place same date. (18-09-1944, Aalst)
https://flic.kr/p/2iAv6Wu The car behind the one on the other picture has it on the back. Famous picture of the recce on the 11th of september south of Valkenswaard shows it as well. https://flic.kr/p/2iAr8Ug Unfortunatly on the most pictures I saw so far the logo is blocked by people or starage of goods.
You are a wealth of info—— Yes that is the logo. Is it white on a red background? My original plan was to paint my stag with the Hercules markings. But I like the Red Knight idea. I haven’t figured out how to send photos yet. But I will try to send you a photo of my vehicle. Thanks. Rod

Kevin, As you rightly remarked, both RED KNIGHT and GREEN KNIGHT carry the AoS Serial 40 on a Black Flash as well as the Guards Armd Div sign, and therefore belong to HQ Guards Armd Div and not to 2 Household Cavalry. The name of the vehicles itself is an indication, departing from the pattern of names starting with H of the Household Cavalry: Source: IWM A70 150-3 from 00:54 Source: IWM 105-7 extract in The True Glory restored by the US National Archives – around 00:51:23 Source: IWM A70 150-3 from 01:04 A further confirmation is brought by the photography of HERCULES F225546 shot on the same day, which as you show carries the AoS 44 with the white bar above denoting Corps Troops. The 8 Corps sign, hidden by the handerchief waver on the foreground on BU482A: THE BRITISH ARMY IN NORTH-WEST EUROPE 1944-45. © IWM (BU 482A) is however clearly visible on a couple of frames on Film A70 150-7 (not online at the IWM) from which BU482A is extracted: Source: IWM 105-7 extract in The True Glory restored by the US National Archives – around 00:51:12 Michel
What is the number or marking under the 40 on the right fender of Red Knight? Looks like a number with something under it.
I too have wondered what this could be. It looks too short and lacks the prefix F to be the reg number, and looks remarkably similar to the marking at the same location on GREEN KNIGHT, so I believe it is the mobilisation serial number for HQ Guards Armd Div, which I regrettably do not know...
